The world has changed since Caesar led the apes to their liberation. Humans have regressed to a feral state while many different nations of apes have sprung up, each with their own politics and rulers. In this new world, the legacy of Caesar has been twisted to suit the needs of power-hungry apes who seek to enslave each other. Their ultimate aim is to find the human technology that will allow them to marshal total control and obedience. But one young ape from a defeated clan stands against this tyranny. Alongside a young human woman, the pair discover the past and plot for a peaceful future.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is an upcoming dystopian science fiction movie. It is a sequel to War for the Planet of the Apes and the fourth movie in the rebooted franchise that includes Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. As with previous movies in the franchise, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. The pair are also responsible for writing Jurassic World and Avatar: Way of Water. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is directed by Wes Ball, the filmmaker who directed The Maze Runner and the sequels, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, and Maze Runner: The Death Cure.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes features Owen Teague in the role of Noa. Teague is known for his roles in Reptile, It, and It Chapter Two. Freya Allan, known for her role as Princess Cirilla in The Witcher stars as Mae. Kevin Durand voices the character Proximus Caesar while Peter Macon stars as Raka. The rest of the cast includes Travis Jeffrey, William H. Macy, Eka Darville, Neil Sandilands, Sara Wiseman, Lydia Peckham, Dichen Lachman, and Ras-Samuel Weld A’abzgi.
While Caesar does not directly feature in the movie his legacy and teachings are an important plot point. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is set 300 years after War for the Planet of the Apes.
After starring in the first three movies, Andy Serkis does not feature in the cast for the fourth film in the franchise. However, it has been reported that Serkis offered lead actor Owen Teague advice and support in getting into the role, especially in relation to acting in motion capture.
Much of the fourth movie in the new Planet of the Apes franchise was shot in Disney Studios Australia. The rest of the movie was shot in Helensburgh, Australia, an area known for old rail tunnels, especially the famous Glow Worm Tunnel. Director Wes Ball confirmed that most of the movie was shot on location with sparing use of blue screen.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is set in the same timeline as the three previous movies in the franchise. Nonetheless, the movie is considered the first of a new trilogy of movies with director Wes Ball confirming his interest in furthering the story.
