Anora (2024)

Anora begins by introducing viewers to Anora, a young stripper-turned-hustler who thinks she’s in control. But after meeting a mysterious Russian client…things suddenly turn. The film is sexy, likable, and even gets a good dose of action going too. It’s kind of like Showgirls or Pretty Woman was merged with The Godfather. If that sounds odd, trust me, it is. And yet, it all weirdly works out flawlessly creating a really fun and surprisingly deep movie.

Anora is almost like two movies in one. Fans of rom-coms should be aware it starts as a rom-com but ultimately veers into an emotional, thought-provoking commentary on sex work, classism, and the nature of love. It's equal parts funny, provocative, and heartrending, elevated by powerful performances, particularly from Mikey Madison, and an adult fairy tale-esque premise. Anora will most likely appeal to those familiar with director Sean Baker's other work tackling morality and sexuality, like Starlet and Red Rocket, but it is also worth a watch for anyone interested in a rom-com that avoids the pitfalls of superficiality.
