Sometimes villainous and sometimes virtuous, these highly skilled specials have been selected very carefully. Studied, chosen, and set on assignment by the Contessa, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, the Thunderbolts are the ragtag rogues that the agencies turn to in the absence of the Avengers. Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes, continues his long-running redemption arc and is the de facto leader of the Thunderbolts. U.S. Agent, John Walker, could be looking to make amends for past mistakes by joining the Thunderbolts. Super-spy Yelena Belova and her super soldier father-figure, Red Guardian are also in the lineup. Joining them is Taskmaster, a superhuman capable of perfect mimicry, and Ghost, a quantum jumping intangible being. With most superheroes dispersed on all forms of intergalactic and multiversal missions the market for superhuman defense is wide open. This assemblage of sometimes corrupt but persuadable mercenaries is now the most reliable outfit for the task at hand. But can they stick it out together or will the appearing cracks split them open before the end?
Thunderbolts* is an upcoming superhero action movie developed by Marvel Studios. It is the final instalment of Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is the thirty-seventh title in the franchise. The movie is produced by Kevin Feige and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
Continuing a trend of plucking for well-loved indie filmmakers, Marvel Studios opts for Jack Schreier to direct this villainous team-up adventure. Schreier is known for the movies Robot & Frank, Paper Town and the television show Beef.
The script of Thunderbolts* is written by Lee Sung Jin, Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo. Lee Sung Jin is known for working with director Jack Schreier on the Netflix series Beef. He won a Primetime Emmy Award for his writing on that show. Joanna Calo also wrote on Beef alongside other shows such as The Bear and Bojack Horseman. The third writer attached to the movie is Eric Pearson who has worked on a host of different Marvel projects such as Thor: Ragnarok, Black Widow, and Agent Carter.
The cast of this supervillain team-up movie includes Sebastian Stan once again reprising his role as Bucky Barnes and Wyatt Russell as John Walker, U.S. Agent. Both had feature roles in Falcon and The Winter Solider and return to continue their dynamic. Emmy Award-winning actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus is the Contessa, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine who is scheming this team together. Florence Pugh and David Harbour are Yelena Belova and Red Guardian respectively. Both are joined by Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster and Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr, Ghost. Veteran actor Harrison Ford stars as Thunderbolt Ross. Geraldine Viswanathan stars as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine's assistant. Laurence Fishburne and Rachel Weisz star as Bill Foster and Melina Vostokoff.
The Thunderbolts are a group of Marvel antiheroes. In the comics they are comprised of reformed villains who join together to fill the void after the Avengers are declared dead. In Thunderbolts* the live-action movie, the group contains a mix of heroes and villains who are sent on missions by the United States government.
