A Complete Unknown (2024)

A Complete Unknown pays a solid tribute to Bob Dylan by centering his music and maintaining his enigmatic legacy. Timothée Chalamet further solidifies his status as one of the best actors of his generation with his electric transformation into Dylan and his ability to breathe new life into beloved songs in a way that will earn approval from most musical biopic fans. Reminiscent of Martin Scorsese's documentary No Direction Home: Bob Dylan and as intriguing as popular biopics like Rocketman and Elvis, A Complete Unknown is an excellent watch for lovers of Dylan, music, or Chalamet.

A Complete Unknown follows a young Bob Dylan (played by Timothée Chalamet in one of the best performances of his career so far) as he works his way into the music industry and then shoots to stardom. Dylan clashed with the times and ushered in a new era of music, making him one of the most seminal artists of his time, and the film captures that journey perfectly. Along with Chalamet, the cast is stacked with great talent including Elle Fanning and Edward Norton. If you love honest music biopics like Walk the Line or Elvis, you’ll want to watch A Complete Unknown.

This biopic differentiates itself from others by not treating its subject matter as an object. Instead, we get to see a more personal side of Bob Dylan, who just wanted to write music without being confined to one genre. We get a peek into his life with Suze Rotolo, whose name was changed to Sylvie Russo for the film, and the strain that fame put on their relationship. Timothée Chalamet is brilliant as Bob Dylan, which is saying a lot since I never took an interest in any of his previous projects. But he's definitely earned a new fan. And the music is basically a character all on its own.
