There are many things to look forward to in the new year, but for movie enthusiasts, one of the most alluring aspects of the new year is that a whole fresh slate of movies awaits. 2024 has quite a variety of films coming in the new year, including several that were delayed from 2023 due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.
For example, viewers were supposed to get Dune: Part Two in November 2023, but it was pushed to this year, making viewers all the more anxious to see the sequel to Denis Villeneuve's epic sci-fi film. The strikes also resulted in some 2024 releases being pushed into next year and beyond. Hence, the year will be a little light on superhero films, with the MCU releasing just one film and the DCU releasing none.
Fortunately, Deadpool 3 and Joker: Folie à Deux are still on the 2024 slate and are expected to have significant box office power. It is every Marvel comic book fan’s dream to see a Wolverine and Deadpool crossover on the big screen, and the cherry on top is that both characters are entering the MCU for the first time in the film. Meanwhile, Joaquin Phoenix will likely dazzle again in the sequel to the surprise 2019 hit Joker.
The Mad Max film series is also giving viewers another installment in 2024, and it will see one of Hollywood’s fastest-rising stars, Anya Taylor-Joy, in the lead role. A few other significant franchises are expanding in 2024, with such films as Kung Fu Panda 4, A Quiet Place: Day One, and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
While films from established series and franchises tend to draw the most hype, a few original blockbusters also hold potential, such as IF, starring Ryan Reynolds and John Krasinski, and the sure-to-be tear-jerking inspirational Mark Wahlberg movie Arthur the King. Between the sequels and prequels from big franchises and the creative approaches of original films, 2024 is shaping up to be a big year for the cinema.
Here are the most highly anticipated releases in order of release date.
