Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda the Good were once university friends. After a rocky start to their relationship, the roommates at Shiz University form a bond. Elphaba battles the discrimination faced by animals at the school and shows herself to be a principled and powerful sorcerer. Glinda meanwhile is preoccupied with her own beauty and love of Fiyero, a Prince from Winkie Country, the Eastern region of the Land of Oz. Talented with magic, Elphaba and Glinda travel to the Emerald City to meet the Wizard of Oz. Behind the curtain is a dark secret about the Wizard that shocks them both. While Elphaba is steadfast, Glinda has a choice to make between a comfortable life in Oz and taking the same fate as her fleeing friend.
Wicked: Part One is a musical fantasy movie produced by Marc Platt Productions for Universal Pictures. The movie is based on the musical of the same name and the book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Wicked: Part One is directed by Jon M. Chu, an American filmmaker known for Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights. The adapted screenplay is handled by Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz. Celebrated production designer Nathan Crowley is confirmed to be working on the set.
Wicked: Part One features a star-studded cast led by Grammy Award-winning pop icon Ariana Grande starring as Glinda. Opposite her, portraying Elphaba is the decorated actress and singer Cynthia Erivo, recipient of a Tony Award, a Grammy Award, and multiple Academy Award nominations. The wider cast includes Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero Tigelaar, Jeff Goldblum as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, and Ethan Slater as Boq. Peter Dinklage stars as Dr. Dillamond.
Director John M. Chu claimed that in the early stages of production the team felt that they could not tell the story in a single movie without doing damage to the story. In order to include as many fan favorite songs as possible and to do justice to the source material, the production team decided to split the musical into two movies.
Composer Stephen Schwartz is handling the music for the movie. He is best known for having worked on movies such as The Prince of Egypt, Enchanted, Pocahontas, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Additionally, Schwartz handled the music for the Wicked in Concert TV special that aired in 2021.
The movie began filming in Buckinghamshire, England as well as Sky Studios in Elstree. The movie was intended to film between April and July 2023 but was delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
