The film follows the fictional story of a group of journalists who are attempting to survive and cover the outbreak of a civil war in the United States. Civil War is written and directed by Alex Garland, who is known for his previous films Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Men. The cinematography is done by Rob Hardy, who previously worked with Garland on Ex Machina and Annihilation.
