In a not so distant future, all out war has broken out in the United States of America, with 19 states already seceding from the union and the country divided into a so-called Western Force in Texas and California and the rest of the US. Meanwhile, a group of journalists try and keep the population informed at great personal risk.
Civil War is a war drama produced by DNA Films for A24. The film follows the fictional story of a group of journalists who are attempting to survive and cover the outbreak of a civil war in the United States. Civil War is written and directed by Alex Garland, who is known for his previous films Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Men. The cinematography is done by Rob Hardy, who previously worked with Garland on Ex Machina and Annihilation.
Civil War features an all-star cast, including Kirsten Dunst (The Power of the Dog, Fargo), Jesse Plemons (Fargo, Killers of the Flower Moon), Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla, Mare of Easttown), Wagner Moura (Narcos), and Stephen McKinley Henderson (Law & Order, Fences). Other cast members include Nick Offerman as the American president, Karl Glusman, Sonoya Mizuno, and Jonica T Gibbs.
There are several different factions involved in the fictional civil war. One of the most powerful is the alliance between California and Texas called the Western Forces (WF), and the other is the Florida Alliance (FA). The other factions involved are the Loyalist States and the New People’s Army.
Civil War was given an R rating by the American Motion Picture Association due to “strong, violent content, bloody/disturbing images and language throughout”. An R rating in the US means that viewers under 17 must be accompanied by an adult if they wish to see the film in cinemas.
