Mickey is an ‘expendable’, a term used to describe a disposable worker sent to colonise the ice planet Niflheim; when he dies, he is simply regenerated, memories intact, in a clone body. However, his seventh iteration, Mickey7, starts to question his gruelling role.
Mickey 17 is an upcoming sci-fi film produced by Warner Bros. The film is based on Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel Mickey7. The film is written and directed by South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho, who previously directed the highly acclaimed Parasite, Snowpiercer, and Okja. Iranian-French cinematographer Darius Khondji collaborates with Bong Joon-ho for the second time for the film, having worked together previously on Okja. Khondji is the creator of the visual style featured in films such as Uncut Gems, Amour, and Bardo. Another Bong Joon-ho collaborator, Jung Jae-il, composes the film’s score, after previously writing the score for Parasite.
Robert Pattinson stars in Mickey 17 as the titular Mickey. Pattinson gained fame through his role in the Twilight saga before moving on to roles in films such as Tenet, The Batman, Good Time, and The Lighthouse. He is joined by Naomi Ackie (Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody) as Nasha, and Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead) as Berto. Other cast members include Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and Alif Satar.
