Paying equal respect to the professionalism of both Pacino’s cop and De Niro’s crime boss, it has nuanced characters and destructive action, Los Angeles looking more knackered and desperate than any previous Mann cityscape, and dialogue that’s very nearly overcooked, but not quite. The De Niro/Pacino face-off does not disappoint, either - it’s a true modern epic.

Mann continued his obsession with bad men roving around diseased urban sprawls with the sensational Collateral, featuring perhaps Tom Cruise’s most malevolent role as an assassin who ropes in Jamie Foxx’s taxi driver to help with a series of tricky jobs, and Miami Vice, which reboots the TV show where Mann’s career started but is nowhere near as cheesy as the source material.

Then there are the films that deviate from the template: gloriously, in the case of deadly serious whistleblower drama The Insider, somewhat less serious Nazi monster romp The Keep, and sweeping historical drama The Last of the Mohicans, which superficially at least is nothing like your average Mann movie. “Reacher’s back,” said the poster for the second season of Reacher on Prime Video, the slogan writ large across Alan Ritchson’s colossal, rippling torso, photographed from behind. It was a brilliant bit of marketing because, with one silhouette and two words, it captured why this action crime thriller is so addictive: yes, it’s about a massive bloke who obliterates everyone he gets into a fight with, but it has a sneaky, self-deprecating sense of humour that makes it unique.

There is nobody quite like Jack Reacher, the hero of Lee Child’s bestselling novels, who has been so completely embodied - and what a body it is - by Ritchson. But there are plenty of other TV shows that have flashes of the Reacher magic.

Season one of Reacher is all about small southern American towns rotted by violent crime, while the second run visits the grubby gamblers’ paradise of Atlantic City - both are locations where Raylan Givens, the cocky marshal in Justified, would thrive. Like Reacher, you trust Givens to emerge from encounters with the baddest of bad guys with all his teeth intact and his smile wider than ever. Reacher also drifts from town to town, reluctantly running into trouble wherever he goes, like The Mandalorian without Baby Yoda and the spaceship.

And, like Mando, our man Jack is unbeatable in hand-to-hand combat. The first episode of Reacher announced itself as a juicy fight show with an unforgettable beat-down in a prison shower, the sort of bone-snapping scrap we haven’t seen on TV since the glory days of Banshee - another show where a lawman, albeit a bogus one, takes on local criminals, one by one.

In Reacher, though, the smalltime criminals always lead to a big conspiracy, and there is no shortage of great shows where tough Americans bring down a nefarious plot all on their lonesome. The Old Man is a strong one, with Jeff Bridges as the former secret agent who is still lethal in his old age. Another underrated spy thriller is The Night Agent, where Gabriel Basso is one good man fighting his way out of a series of impossible predicaments, caused by bad actors at the top of the political food chain. In Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, John Krasinski is a senior CIA man, but it doesn’t stop him needing to use bullets and fists to bring the villains down. The first two of those, at least, share Reacher’s powder-dry wit.

For more hard-boiled US crime, you should try Bosch: Legacy, an excellent detective drama set on the streets of Los Angeles. But a lot of Reacher’s power and poise comes from him being an ex-military man: to find that vibe again, watch Shooter (Ryan Phillippe as an ex-sniper framed as an assassin) or The Terminal List (Chris Pratt as a Navy Seal avenging the murder of his family).

It may be that only Alan Ritchson will do. If so, the closest you’ll get to Reacher is probably the superhero saga Titans, where he’s a vigilante in Lycra. Ritchson has bulked up a lot since then, though - Reacher’s muscles would never fit in the costume.

Which version of Hugh Grant is your favourite? The British actor used to be the rakish, plummy king of romantic comedy but, as he’s got a little older, he’s become more adventurous with his film roles. Our Hugh can now pop up on the big screen playing anything from a con artist in Dungeons and Dragons: Honour among Thieves and a cannibal in Cloud Atlas to Daniel Craig’s apron-wearing other half in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

Back in the 1990s, when he was fresh of face and floppy of hair, Grant was a reliable presence in the best period dramas of the time, with pivotal supporting roles in The Remains of the Day and the brilliant Emma Thompson version of Sense & Sensibility - not forgetting his startling breakthrough in the early Merchant-Ivory production Maurice.

His best-known and best-loved performances, however, will forever be in the run of rom-com hits written by Richard Curtis that started with Four Weddings and a Funeral, where Grant heads up a gang of British friends who are constantly pulling on their best suits, piling into cars and attending other people’s lavish weddings. For the dark side of Hugh Grant: The Blundering Dreamboat Years, there are the two Bridget Jones movies, where he’s less lovable and more of a rogue.

When Grant was at the peak of his fame, many people tried to dismiss him as just a pretty face and a cut-glass accent, but underneath that flustered exterior there has always been a seriously gifted comic performer. You can see it in his work in American romantic comedies, where even if the movie isn’t the best, Grant is always terrific in his role - and in the likes of Two Weeks Notice (co-starring Sandra Bullock) and Music & Lyrics (with Drew Barrymore), the films aren’t too bad at all.

But there’s no pretty woman for Grant to win over in the movie that’s our pick of the best film he has ever appeared in, even if Four Weddings will always be the favourite for his fans: the pure joy that is Paddington 2. Acclaimed studio Aardman Animation has been entertaining audiences for over six decades with their award-winning stop motion films. Founded by Peter Lord and David Sproxton in 1972, Aardman started out by making 5-minute shorts for UK broadcasters such as the BBC.

Within a collection of shorts for Channel 4 was Nick Park’s academy-award winning film Creature Comforts, where zoo animals were matched with human’s voices talking about their homes. The comical clips made it seem as though the animals were commenting on their own living conditions. The ‘Before’ Trilogy

Call Me By Your Name

Director Luca Guadagnino directs the story of a summer in 1983 in northern Italy, where the moody and reclusive 17-year-old Elio is spending the season with his mother and archeology professor father. When Harry Met Sally

Known as one of the greatest (if not the greatest) romantic comedies of all time, When Harry Met Sally continues to earn its status through a mixture of typical rom-com tropes and more realistic elements like right timing and personal growth. When Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) first meet, they can barely stand each other, and part ways as soon as they finish the car journey from Chicago to New York City. They go years without seeing one another until they reconnect by chance. Only after several more years are they in a place to foster first a close friendship, before finally progressing to a real relationship. While When Harry Met Sally is a rom-com and Past Lives is a romantic drama, the films both share a dedication to understanding how the passage of time affects our most precious relationships, and allows them to progress in different and unexpected ways.

Atonement

This utter heartbreaker starring Kiera Knightly and James McAvoy takes a spot on this list for its depictions of unrequited love and missed opportunities. The film is based on Ian McEwan’s book of the same name, and takes place between World Wars in 1935. The film tells the story of Briony Tallis, a 13-year-old growing up in a large estate owned by her wealthy family. Due to her jealousy and confusion over her older sister Cecilia’s budding relationship with Robbie, the housekeeper’s son, Briony plays a key role in Robbie’s conviction for a crime of which he was innocent — a move that irrevocably changes the course of their love forever. Although Atonement is far more devastating in tone than Past Lives, the persistent question of ‘what if?' pervades both storylines.

Three Christopher Nolan movies are in the Top 10 charts this week. Fans are rewatching his past films following the success of Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer premiered in cinemas on July 21. It is a critical and commercial success and has broken IMAX box office records. 

Elemental enters the Top 10 this week, with the Pixar animated movie available on Disney+. Other popular movies, including Spider-Man: Across the Universe and Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, have spent many weeks on the charts. Here are the most-watched movies of the week:

 

After the award-winning success of her series Derry Girls, which followed the lives of four school girls and a ‘wee English fella’ during the 1990s in Northern Ireland, creator Lisa McGee has announced her latest project: a comedy-thriller series called How to Get to Heaven from Belfast.

Like Derry Girls, the series will be created and written by McGee, and will focus on the close friendships at the heart of the story. However, this time the friends are in their late thirties and have chosen very different life paths since their days at school together. The story follows Saoirse, Robyn, and Dara, who are brought together again by the death of their old school friend, Greta. Saoirse is now a successful writer with middling impulse control, and Robyn is a foul-mouthed, stressed mother-of-three, while Dara has been stuck still living in her childhood bedroom and taking care of an aging parent. Things regarding Greta's death not as straightforward as they seem, and the three women find themselves on a journey out of Belfast and across Ireland in search of answers. 

Jane Austen fans can breathe a sigh of relief today, because the long wait for the final season of Sanditon is finally over. Although season 3 already had its American debut on PBS all the way back in March, fans in the UK were left wondering when the final season of the beloved series would make its way across the pond. Although Sanditon started out as a British television series on ITV, it was cancelled after one season. Luckily, campaigns by dedicated fans and interest from PBS Masterpiece gave the series a chance on American TV, where it continued for another two seasons. The third season of Sanditon is finally being released in the UK today, August 17, 2023, on ITVX.

The series is based on unpublished writings by famed 18th–19th century author Jane Austen. Her notable works have been adapted into acclaimed series and films several times, including but not limited to Pride and Prejudice (both the BBC miniseries and the film), Emma, Mansfield Park, Persuasion, and Sense and Sensibility. Sanditon was Austen’s final work, and she sadly died before completing the manuscript. Screenwriter and novelist Andrew Davies took on the task of adapting the text to the screen, basing the characters on Austen’s writing while taking their stories in new directions.

Past Lives is a South Korean - American drama written and directed by Celine Song. The film had its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival in January 2023, and then screened at a number of other festivals including the Berlin International Film Festival. The film has received critical acclaim on the festival circuit and is set for a theatrical release in the United Kingdom and select international markets. It is distributed by A24. Here’s what we know about Past Lives.

What is Past Lives about? 

Past Lives follows three characters whose lives are intimately entangled together. Nora and Hae Sung were close childhood friends in South Korea, but they lost touch when Nora and her family moved to Canada. Now an adult, Nora works as a playwright and lives in New York City with her husband, Arthur.

Out of the blue, Nora receives a message from Hae Sung. Hae Sung tells her that he is coming to New York and would like to meet her. Nora is confronted with her past, and a multitude of ‘what ifs’, as she comes face to face with someone who used to be such a big part of her world.

 

Gal Gadot has recently announced that she’ll be returning to play Diana Prince / Wonder Woman, and working with James Gunn on Wonder Woman 3. The news comes as a surprise, since it was not previously announced as part of Gunn and Peter Safran’s reimagined DC Universe, or their upcoming Chapter One: Gods and Monsters slate. 

Gadot previously played the iconic female superhero in Wonder Woman and its sequel Wonder Woman 1984, which were both directed by Patty Jenkins. It’s unclear at this point if Jenkins will return. 

While we wait for more information on the Gunn / Gadot collaboration, Gadot has a number of high profile films in the pipeline, starting with the Netflix action spy movie Heart of Stone. 

Heart of Stone

Tasked with ensuring the safety of a valuable asset, intelligence agent Rachel Stone is about to face the biggest mission of her career to date. Gadot stars as Stone in the upcoming Heart of Stone film, alongside Fifty Shades of Grey actor Jamie Dornan. Heart of Stone is directed by British director Tom Harper, and also includes Alia Bhatt, Sophie Okonedo and Matthias Schweighöfer in the cast. Read more about the film here. 

Heart of Stone will premiere on Netflix on August 11, 2023. 

 

The upcoming television series ‘Those About to Die’ is headed to Prime Video in the UK, exploring the world of gladiators in Ancient Rome. It is developed by Robert Rodat, and directed by Roland Emmerich and Marco Kreuzpaintner. Emmerich and Rodat also serve as executive producers on the project. 

Rodat is a producer, writer and Academy Award nominee for Best Original Screenplay on Saving Private Ryan. Emmerich is a director, writer and producer, whose previous work includes Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow and White House Down. 

The show will air on Peacock in the US. ‘Those About to Die’ is one of few shows available to watch on different streaming services outside of the US, despite the fact that Peacock TV is available in the UK. The first season of the show contains ten episodes. 

The show will be available to stream exclusively on Prime in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Ireland, Poland, Turkey, Andorra, Luxembourg, Belgium and Monaco. Negotiations are still ongoing for the free TV rights outside of Prime Video’s exclusive distribution window. 

 

From the weird and wonderful mind of Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos comes Poor Things. After the success of past films such as The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Lanthimos has established himself as one of Hollywood’s most original auteurs, and is known for his thought-provoking storylines. Lanthimos’ films have also received critical acclaim, with 2018’s The Favourite winning the Grand Jury Prize at the 75th Venice International Film Festival, and earning ten Academy Award nominations with Olivia Colman winning for Best Actress. 

Lanthimos is known for his frequent collaborations with actors such as Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Joe Alwyn and Emma Stone. Emma Stone takes the lead role in Poor Things as Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back by the scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter.
