The Planet of the Apes franchise has kept audiences thinking about the course of evolution ever since the first film was released in 1968. Based on French author Pierre Boulle’s novel La Planète des Singes (Monkey Planet), the films bring us into a dystopian sci-fi world in which apes have evolved to be the dominant species. Check out our guide to find out how to watch all of the Planet of the Apes movies in order, and see where you can stream them all below!

The Planet of the Apes franchise is made up of 10 films, including the original 1968 film, its four sequels (1970–1973, the 2001 remake of the first film, and the subsequent four films in the rebooted series (2011–2024).

How to Watch the Planet of the Apes in Order of Release

If you want to watch the Planet of the Apes films in order, one way would be to simply watch them in order of release. The first five films from 1968 to 1973 simply stand as their own complete series. The following five are an alternative reimagining that takes the story in a different direction — complete with CGI and more modern effects. The first film, Tim Burton’s 2001 remake of the first Planet of the Apes, is a standalone story, while Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver’s following four films reboot the series.

How to Watch the Planet of the Apes in Chronological Order

If you’re keen to watch the Planet of the Apes movies in chronological order, we recommend starting with 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Officially, it is a prequel/origin story for Caesar (the chimp who leads the original rebellion against the humans), and leads into Dawn, War, and finally Kingdom (some 300 years later). Be warned that the franchise suffers from countless continuity issues, so watching it in chronological order might prove more trouble than it’s worth!

How to Watch the Rebooted Planet of the Apes Movies in Order:

  • 2019? - Rise of the Planet of the Apes
  • 2029 - Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
  • 2031 - War for the Planet of the Apes
  • 2328 - Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
