MobLand (2025)

MobLand hits a sweet spot between the comedy-gangster shenanigans of Guy Ritchie movies (Ritchie directs it, but leaves the scripting to the more serious-minded Ronan Bennett of Top Boy fame) and the sort of mob dramas that are so dark they're depressing. Tom Hardy is excellent as Harry, the fixer who tidies up after the chaotic Harrigan clan: Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren both enjoy cutting loose as the couple at the top of the family tree. It's easily watchable, nicely funny on occasion and majors in imaginative threats and violence... Hardy often does all the above in the same scene.

Tom Hardy calms his often absurd accents here for a toned down yet no less menacing growl that he puts to good use threatening criminals as London's premier "fixer". More star power comes in the form of a delightfully unhinged pairing between Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren who are at odds with other gangsters in London and also each other. MobLand hardly reinvents the genre, but Guy Ritchie's reliable direction and some manic writing choices are a perfect match for dads looking to get their next macho fix on screen. And no, I don't know why the title comes with two capital letters either.
