Studio Ghibli is one of the most successful animation studios in the world. Famed for its movies directed by Hayao Miyazaki, read on to learn about the studio and for details on where to watch all the Studio Ghibli movies online using streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video and more!

The History Of Studio Ghibli

Toshio Suzuki hired Hayao Miyazaki to write and direct 1984’s Nausicaä Of The Valley Of The Wind, which Takahata produced. The success of the film led the three filmmakers to found Studio Ghibli in 1985.

The Success Of Studio Ghibli

Hayao Miyazaki’s films became a critical and commercial success in Japan, with Studio Ghibli’s early successes Castle in the Sky (1986), My Neighbour Totoro (1988) and Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989). The studio then found international acclaim with the release of Princess Mononoke in 1997, which was the first animated film to win the Japan Academy Film Prize for Picture of the Year.

Studio Ghibli also produced Spirited Away, which was the first non-English-language movie to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Spirited Away also won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. It is widely regarded as a cinematic masterpiece, and was the highest grossing Japanese film to date.

Hayao Miyazaki has continued to direct films for Studio Ghibli for almost forty years, with 2023’s The Boy and The Heron rumoured to be his final feature film. His son, Goro Miyazaki, currently serves as managing director of Studio Ghibli, running the company alongside chairman Toshio Suzuki.
