Anime adaptation of One Piece prequel finds home at Netflix

Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation is an anime directed by Sunghoo Park produced by animation studio E&H production for Netflix. The original one-shot manga short story was written by the legendary Eiichiro Oda in 1994 when he was 19 years old and serves as a prequel to Oda's iconic manga series One Piece. Monsters follows the story of samurai Ryuma who was included in One Piece's "Thriller Bark" arc which released between 2007-2008. The original short story was featured in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine's extra issue 1994 Autumn Special.

Sunghoo Park is an anime director whose previous works include directing a number of Jujutsu Kaisen episodes along with helming its 2021 prequel Jujutsu Kaisen 0. The character design on Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation was handled by The Heike Story's Takashi Kojima while Teasing Master Takagi-san's Hiroaki Tsutsumi tackled music duties. The original One Piece manga has been one of the medium's most popular titles for decades, with its anime TV series spanning over 1,000 episodes and a live-action adaptation streaming on Netflix beginning August 2023.

The Japanese voice cast for Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation includes Hosoya Yoshimasa as Ryuma, Kana Hanazawa as Flair, Hiroki Touchi as Shirano, Mitsuaki Madono as DR and Katsuhiro Nomura as Master. Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation premiered on Netflix on January 21, 2024.
