A cadet from the prestigious military academy, West Point, is dead. Not simply dead but left hanging from a rope in the parade grounds. The next morning, an even more horrifying fact emerges. Over the course of the night, the heart of the boy has been removed. With suicide ruled out, the top brass must quietly investigate this terrifying threat. Local civilian, Gus Landor is a retired widower. Once a police detective, the keen-eyed investigator is coaxed from his restless retirement to take on the case. In his questions and queries, Gus attracts a young cadet eager to help. Never too far from a drink, nor from his volumes of poetry, Edgar Allan Poe is the willing assistant. The pair risk the peril of an unrecognizable evil as it eludes their greatest efforts of discovery.

The Pale Blue Eye is a gothic mystery movie based on the novel of the same name written by Louis Bayard. The movie adaptation is written and directed by Scott Cooper. Once an actor in film and television, Cooper broke out as a director with his 2009 directorial debut Crazy Heart. With a string of successful movies across a variety of genres, Cooper is renowned for a dark dramatic tone that does not shy away from violence. Cooper is joined by frequent collaborator, Masanobu Takayanagi who takes the role of cinematographer marking the pair's third collaboration. The legendary composer Howard Shore is on board to provide the film with a specific sound.
The movie features an ensemble cast of high-profile actors led by the acclaimed Christian Bale who plays the retired detective, Augustus Landor. Joining Bale as the co-lead is English actor Harry Melling, taking on a career-defining role as a young Edgar Allan Poe. Joining them is a selection of legendary acting talents including Gillian Anderson, Toby Jones, Robert Duvall, Timothy Spall, and Charlotte Gainsbourg. The talented array of actors – also including Lucy Boynton and Harry Lawtey – are transformed to Civil War-era America in this crime horror mystery. The Pale Blue Eye was released on Netflix on January 6th, 2023.
The Pale Blue Eye was first optioned for director Scott Cooper as far back as 2011 after his breakout hit Crazy Heart. Despite seemingly having given up on the idea and worked consistently on other projects, in February 2021 news arrived that the movie was back in the works with Cooper still attached. At the same time, it was announced that Christian Bale had signed on to lead the picture marking a third collaboration for the pair. The following month, Netflix purchased the rights to the film. In June 2021, English actor Harry Melling, known for roles in the Harry Potter series and the television series The Queen’s Gambit, was cast as a young Edgar Allan Poe. More casting news followed by the end of 2021 with a flurry of announcements including the addition of Gillian Anderson, Timothy Spall, Robert Duvall, and Toby Jones. In August 2022, a selection of images from the movie was revealed alongside the release schedule. The first trailer arrived in October 2022, teasing a dark crime thriller with a fittingly poetic narration. The Pale Blue Eye was released on January 6th, 2023 on the streaming service Netflix.
