Bayard Rustin was a multi-talented individual who dedicated his life to promoting humanitarian causes, fighting for civil rights and organizing labor unions. Despite being an often overlooked figure in the equal rights movement, Rustin played a crucial role as a strategist and organizer during the 1960s. He was responsible for planning and executing the March on Washington and he provided invaluable counsel to Martin Luther King Jr. This biopic serves to honor Rustin's memory and sheds light on his remarkable legacy as an openly gay Black man who was a tireless advocate for justice and equality.
Rustin is a biopic film directed by George C. Wolfe for Netflix. It focuses on the life and career of gay civil rights activist Bayard Rustin from a story by Julian Breece. Breece co-wrote the screenplay with Dustin Lance Black. Black previously won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 2009 with the biopic Milk which depicted the life of openly gay politician Harvey Milk. Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground Productions, produced Rustin. Wolfe is a celebrated Tony Award winning playwright whose previous feature film directing credits include Nights in Rodanthe and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.
Colman Domingo leads the film as the titular Bayard Rustin. Domingo is best known for his supporting roles in 42, Selma and the HBO series Euphoria.
