A group of workers are deployed to establish a settlement on the icy planet of Niflheim. This mission is incredibly dangerous, resembling a suicide mission, and is entrusted to "expendable" employees who are repeatedly regenerated with their memories intact. When one of these expendables is believed to have perished, a new clone is created and prepared to take over. However, complications arise when the previous iteration refuses to yield its place to the new clone, resulting in significant repercussions for both the mission and the entire system as a whole.
Mickey 17 is a science fiction film written and directed by Bong Joon-ho for Warner Bros. Pictures.
The film is based on the Edward Ashton novel titled Mickey7 which was released in 2022. It follows a disposable employee named Mickey 17 who is dispatched on a human expedition to colonize an ice world called Niflheim. Following the death of one version of him, a new body is regenerated, preserving most of his memories.
Bong Joon-ho is a South Korean director revered throughout the film industry having helmed such films as Memories of Murder, Snowpiercer and Okja. He directed the black comedy thriller Parasite in 2019 which earned him four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director.
Darius Khondji, known for his work on films like Amour and Uncut Gems, worked with Bong once again for their second collaboration in Mickey 17 following 2017’s Okja. Jung Jae-il, who previously composed the score for Parasite, also handled the music for Mickey 17. In addition to his directing and writing roles, Bong Joon-ho took on the role of producer for the film alongside Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Dooho Choi.
Production on Mickey 17 kicked off at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden located in the East of England on August 2, 2022, and wrapped up in December of the same year.
Every new edition of the employee is called "Mickey", with the number "17" indicating how many of them there are. During CinemaCon in 2024, Bong elaborated on why they opted for the title Mickey 17 instead of "Mickey 7", despite the book being originally named the latter. He explained: "[Because] I killed him 10 times more."
Robert Pattinson takes on the lead role of Mickey Barnes, showcasing his exceptional talent following acclaimed performances in films like The Lighthouse and High Life. Naomi Ackie, who garnered praise for her stunning portrayal of Whitney Houston in the 2022 biopic musical, stars alongside him as Nasha. The character Berto Gomez is portrayed by Minari actor Steven Yeun. Completing the talented cast are Toni Collette as Gwen Johansen, Mark Ruffalo as Hieronymous Marshall and Alif Satar.
