The Best Movies and TV Shows Like Nosferatu and Where to Watch Them Online

This guide will show you the best movies and TV series to watch if you love the new Nosferatu movie by Robert Eggers. It will also show you where all the titles are streaming online right now.

Nosferatu is getting lots of buzz, not just in the horror community, but among film fans as a whole. The movie is being lauded for its great performances by Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgård, and Willem Dafoe – and for its fantastic visuals, haunting atmosphere, and lingering sense of terror. If you loved the way Nosferatu combined stylistic elements with vampire horror, check out these other great movies and series that are streaming online right now.

Vampire Movies and Shows Like Nosferatu

The original Nosferatu film was a silent, black-and-white movie that premiered back in 1922 and was inspired by the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker. So every Nosferatu fan should check out the original story that inspired it. Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 movie Bram Stoker’s Dracula accurately portrays the original story and has a great cast including Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder.

Another iconic vampire film is Interview With the Vampire, which chronicles the life and (after)life of the vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac, and shows the inner conflicts he has with being a vampire who is forced to live off blood. AMC also has a series adaptation of the same name that’s become a hit for the network and its streaming service AMC+.

Gothic Movies and Shows Like Nosferatu

Nosferatu’s gothic style and setting help make the movie visually gorgeous and fills it with a sense of dread and despair. If you want more gothic vibes, a must-watch film is The Last Voyage of Demeter. The movie is inspired by an early chapter in the novel Dracula and centers around the crew of a merchant ship as they’re hunted by the infamous vampire while crossing the sea.

Another hit inspired by Dracula is Castlevania. The long-running horror video game series has been a favorite for decades and in recent years it’s received two popular television spin-offs with Castlevania and Castlevania: Nocturne. Another series with great gothic vibes is Penny Dreadful. The Showtime series brought together various characters from iconic gothic horror favorites like Dorian Gray, Van Helsing, Dr. Jekyll, and of course, Dracula.

For a more modern take, True Blood took the gothic style and Americanized with it the now-popular subgenre of “southern gothic”. Plus, it centers around vampires, so it’s giving Nosferatu fans everything they want.

Stylistic Movies and Shows Like Nosferatu

Part of what makes Nosferatu so compelling is its fantastic and stylistic cinematography, lighting, and aesthetic. But Nosferatu isn’t the first horror film to take a highly stylized approach. In fact, “art horror” is a well-established subgenre with lots of excellent films. Suspiria is a great example and it’s loaded with unique shots that blend Wes Anderson and Alfred Hitchcock vibes. Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia is another stylistic horror film. In the movie, a rogue planet is about to collide with Earth and one woman (Kirsten Dunst) has known it all along. A gripping orchestral score combined with beautiful visuals make Melancholia a terrifying yet bewitching film.

Fans of Nosferatu should also check out the HBO series Carnivale. Set during the Dust Bowl, the show follows a traveling carnival that finds itself trapped in the middle of a battle between good and evil. The show was praised for its impressive visuals and dark style, earning Emmy wins for costuming, cinematography, and more.

  • Where To Watch the Best Robert Eggers Films, Ranked

Where To Watch the Best Robert Eggers Films, Ranked

Robert Eggers’ name is bound to be tossed around this awards season as his gothic horror film Nosferatu blows audiences and critics away. Shortlisted for the Oscars in several categories, critics have hailed Nosferatu as one of Eggers’ best films. Viewers intrigued by the gothic horror movie can use our guide to find out where to stream all of Eggers’ best movies online.

Nosferatu is arguably Eggers’ best film to date. It follows Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp), a young woman who is stalked by her real estate husband Thomas’ (Nicholas Hoult) client, Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård). The film is a remake of Nosferatu (1922). Although the 1922 movie was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula and, therefore, struck from distribution, it has been hailed as a cornerstone of German expressionism and the modern horror film genre.

While remaking the 1922 classic was an enormous undertaking, Eggers pulled it off. The film pays tribute to its predecessor’s Expressionist elements with its dread-invoking shadowy and misty sets and Gothic architecture, while Eggers adds a layer of haunting seductiveness and psychological depth.

However, Nosferatu isn’t Eggers’ only foray into horror. In 2019, he directed The Lighthouse, loosely inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s unfinished manuscript of the same name. It follows two lighthouse keepers, Ephraim Winslow (Robert Pattinson) and Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe), who start to lose their grip on reality due to their isolation. The dark, dreadful, and suspenseful premise, combined with gripping performances from Pattinson and Dafoe, earned high praise from critics. It especially intrigued viewers due to its ambiguity and genre-defying premise.

Nosferatu and The Lighthouse appear to have improved upon Eggers’ feature-length directorial debut The Witch. The Witch is a religious horror movie that follows Thomasin (Anya Taylor-Joy), a teenager who is blamed for a series of woes and superstitious events that plague her ex-Puritan family. While its slow-burn horror style didn’t appeal to all audiences, it offered a thought-provoking premise and terrifying take on paranoia and religious hysteria.

Meanwhile, horror isn’t Eggers’ only strong suit. The director’s passion for historical detail, folklore, and mythology comes together in his historical epic The Northman. The revenge story follows Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård), a Viking prince driven out of his home as a boy by his evil Uncle. Years later, Amleth sets out to complete his vow to avenge his father, save his mother, and kill his uncle. Although it’s a familiar revenge tale, Eggers imbued the movie with his signature style and stunning visuals, making it difficult to look away from.

Eggers has also directed several short films. While his earliest films, Hansel and Gretel and The Tell-Tale Heart, bear little resemblance to his feature-length work aside from the horror and folklore flair, Brothers evokes the same tone as The Witch.

Critics have hailed Babygirl as one of the best movies of 2024. The erotic psychological thriller follows Romy Mathis (Nicole Kidman), a successful CEO, wife, and mother who has a seemingly perfect life but feels her sexual needs aren’t being met. When she falls for a young intern, Samuel (Harris Dickinson), the two begin an electric but dangerous relationship as power dynamics come into play.

Kidman gives one of the best performances of her career in her bold and daring portrayal of Romy. The film has also earned praise for its complex exploration of sexuality and power. Viewers can use our guide to find more provocative and thrilling movies like Babygirl on platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and more.

The 10 best movies like Babygirl

    A Simple Favor

A Simple Favor isn’t erotic, but like Babygirl, it’s a psychological thriller that delves into women’s desires. The film follows Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick), a widowed mother and mommy vlogger who gets pulled into a wild mystery when her best friend, successful businesswoman Emily Nelson (Blake Lively), disappears. A Simple Favor is twisty and thrilling while exploring power imbalances and what happens when women feel trapped by gender roles or deny their desires for too long.

    Elle

Viewers who enjoyed Babygirl's daring nature will also enjoy Elle. The psychological thriller follows successful CEO Michèle LeBlanc, who attempts to move on with her life after an assault. However, as she struggles to navigate the surprising ways the assault impacted her, she begins trying to track down her assailant. The film isn’t afraid to touch on sensitive subjects in an honest attempt to capture the female experience when it comes to violence, sex, and freedom.

    Eyes Wide Shut

Eye Wide Shut is an erotic psychological thriller by director Stanley Kubrick. The movie centers on Dr. Bill Hartford (Tom Cruise), a man who, perturbed by his wife Alice’s (Kidman) sexual fantasies, sets out to find a sexual encounter of his own with disastrous results. Not only does the film share Kidman with Babygirl, but it’s a similar deep dive into the human psyche, marriage, and attitudes toward sex.

    Femme Fatale

Femme Fatale is a twisty erotic thriller about two look-alikes, Lily and Laure (Rebecca Romijn), who become entangled in a web of thievery, body doubles, and lies. Like Baygirl, it can get a bit far-fetched and campy, but Romijn’s performances, the thrills, and the tantalizing look into human desire and weaknesses make it quite the watch.

    Fresh

Fresh is a horror thriller that follows Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a young woman who agrees to a date with Steve (Sebastian Stan) after meeting him at a supermarket. However, she’s horrified to learn he’s involved in a grisly enterprise centered on human flesh. Fresh takes Babygirl’s attempt to capture the female experience to another level with a no-holds-barred and satirical tale of cannibalism and sex.

    May December

In May December, actress Elizabeth (Natalie Portman) begins researching and spending time with Gracie (Julianne Moore). She’s set to portray Gracie in a film examining Gracie’s controversial relationship with Joe (Charles Melton), who she began dating when she was an adult and he was a teenager. May December and Babygirl both feature age-gap relationships and power imbalances, but the former gets deeper into the topic with a dark and alluring tale of guilt and lies.

    Raw

Raw centers on Justine (Garance Marillier), a vegetarian veterinary student who develops an insatiable craving for flesh after tasting meat for the first time. It is more of a body horror movie than an erotic thriller. However, at their core, Babygirl and Raw are very similar in that they’re both stories of women’s sexual awakenings and the sometimes surprising ways their desires manifest.

    Secretary

Viewers intrigued by the light sadomasochistic elements of Babygirl may be interested in Secretary. The film follows Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal), a socially awkward young woman who begins a relationship with her boss, E. Edward Grey (James Spader), who practices BDSM. Secretary tackles its tricky subject matter and unconventional relationship with the perfect balance of humor, drama, and erotic suspense.

    Shame

Shame is an erotic psychological thriller that tells the story of Brandon Sullivan (Michael Fassbender), a man with a sex addiction. He is forced to confront his struggles when his sister, Sissy (Carey Mulligan), shows up for an impromptu visit and stays at his place. Similar to Babygirl, it’s a bold and captivating movie that delves unflinchingly and nonjudgmentally into topics not frequently touched upon.

    Take This Waltz

Take This Waltz follows Margot (Michelle Williams), a writer who lives a happy, comfortable, but unexciting life with her husband, Lou (Seth Rogen). When she unexpectedly connects with her artist neighbor, Daniel (Luke Kirby), she struggles to understand her feelings and desires. Take This Waltz isn’t as erotic as Babygirl, but it explores similar themes about love, lust, and disconnection.

The historical drama follows Hungarian-Jewish architect László Tóth (Adrien Brody), who survives the Holocaust and emigrates to America, only to find the “American Dream” isn’t what it seems.

    Armageddon Time

Armageddon Time follows Paul Graff (Banks Repeta), a young Jewish-American boy growing up in New York City in the 1980s. While his family is financially stable and has high hopes for his future, Graff starts to become disillusioned with his lifestyle and private school after witnessing the unfair treatment of his African-American friend, Johnny Davis (Jaylin Webb). Like The Brutalist, Armageddon Time is a moving and poignant film that critically examines the American Dream and what it means in a country where not everyone is treated equally.

    Flee

Flee is an animated documentary. Through interviews and vivid animation, Amin Nawabi tells his story about his harrowing journey from Afghanistan to Denmark for the first time. He also reveals a secret and trauma that has prevented him from settling into his adult life with his partner, Kasper. Beautifully animated and profoundly moving, Flee poignantly captures the immigrant experience, including the lasting impacts of trauma and family separation.

    I’m No Longer Here

I’m No Long Here tells the story of Ulises Sampiero (Juan Daniel García Treviño), a teenage boy who flees Mexico to America to avoid gang violence. However, life in America is plagued by homesickness and homelessness as Sampiero is drawn to drugs and unable to provide for himself through his talent for dancing. Like The Brutalist, I’m No Longer Here delves into how immigrants’ struggles exist in both their new and old lives, and, though they may be fleeing violence and persecution, they don’t always find a better life in America.

    In America

In America is a strong alternative to The Brutalist for those seeking a realistic but more hopeful depiction of the immigrant experience. The film follows Johnny (Paddy Considine) and Sarah Sullivan (Samantha Morton), who move to America with their daughters so Johnny can pursue an acting career. However, the family struggles under financial strain and lingering grief over their son’s passing. In America offers a moving tale of an immigrant family’s struggles while also exploring their connections and triumphs.

    Minari

Minari is a semiautobiographical film by director Lee Isaac Chung that explores the immigrant experience of the Yi family. South Korean immigrants Jacob (Steven Yeun) and Monica Yi (Han Ye-ri) and their children move to Arkansas, where their pursuit of the American Dream hits numerous roadblocks as they struggle to sustain their farm and family. The film is bittersweet and heartwrenching, deconstructing the American Dream while offering a little hope as it delves into the inspiring story of a family’s resilience.

    Past Lives

Past Lives follows Nora Moon (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo), two schoolchildren who fell in love but were separated when Nora moved to America. Years later, the pair meet again as adults and muse about their past lives and what-ifs. Past Lives leans more into romance and melancholy than The Brutalist, offering a lighter, alternative look into immigration that focuses on what is left behind.

    Problemista

Like The Brutalist, Problemista is a film where art and the immigrant experience meet. The film is an excellent lighthearted alternative to The Brutalist as it follows Alejandro (Julio Torres), an immigrant who begins working for eccentric artist Elizabeth (Tilda Swinton) in his desperation to make his dream of becoming a toy maker come true before his work visa expires. Problemista leans into absurdist humor as it poignantly pays tribute to the immigrant experience and the absurdity and confusion that often abound when navigating the U.S. immigration system.

    The City

Through four vignettes, The City tells the story of several Latino immigrants who struggle to find work and fair wages in their various occupations as day laborers, puppeteers, and sweatshop workers. Like The Brutalist, The City offers a gritty and realistic look at the immigrant experience, especially regarding how hardworking and talented individuals struggle to follow the American Dream when their talents and work ethic are frequently taken advantage of.

    The Joy Luck Club

The Joy Luck Club follows the eponymous club of Chinese immigrants, Lindo Jong (Tsai Chin), Ying-Ying St. Clair (France Nuyen), An-Mei Hsu (Lisa Lu), and Suyuan Woo (Kieu Chinh), who meet regularly to play mahjong. During their meetings, the women recall their stories, recounting the trials and trauma of their pasts, their new lives in America, and the difficulty they have in bonding with their Chinese-American daughters. Like The Brutalist, The Joy Luck Club delves into trauma, cultural divides, and the immigrant experience but does so from the female perspective.

    The Kite Runner

The Kite Runner follows Amir (Khalid Abdalla), an Afghan-American writer forced to return to his birth country, where he must confront his trauma and shame over letting down his childhood friend Hassan (Ahmad Khan Mahmoodzada). Similar to The Brutalist, The Kite Runner is a brutal, gritty, and emotional look at friendship, trauma, and abuse.

Best Bob Dylan movies like A Complete Unknown

    Bob Dylan: Dont Look Back

For viewers interested in learning more about Dylan, few movies and documentaries are as honest and straightforward as Dont Look Back. The documentary film by D. A. Pennebaker offers a behind-the-scenes look at Dylan’s 1965 concert tour in England, including candid shots of his performances or the legend singing songs in his hotel room. It’s an artistic documentary that emphasizes realism and captures the real Dylan close to the same time period A Complete Unknown dramatizes.

    I’m Not There

I’m Not There is an excellent alternative for viewers looking for a more experimental biographical film than A Complete Unknown. The movie follows six different characters portrayed by Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Marcus Carl Franklin, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger, and Ben Whishaw through six different stories. Every story correlates to an aspect of Dylan’s life or personality. Like A Complete Unknown, it tackles the electric instrument controversy through Jude Quinn’s (Blanchett) story and is chock-full of A-list stars. However, it gets deeper and more artistic in examining Dylan’s life.

    No Direction Home: Bob Dylan

No Direction Home: Bob Dylan is a documentary by legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese. Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese

Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story is Scorsese’s second documentary on Dylan, which covers the musician’s Rolling Thunder Revue concert tour and outtakes of Renaldo and Clara, the film Dylan directed and starred in during his tour. Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story gets closer to the creativity of A Complete Unknown with its intertwining of recovered footage from Renaldo and Clara and the inclusion of fictional interviews. Its mixture of fact and fiction can be confusing, but the documentary ultimately offers one of the most creative takes on Dylan yet.

Best biopics like A Complete Unknown

    Bob Marley: One Love

Bob Marley: One Love dramatizes the life and career of reggae singer Bob Marley (Kingsley Ben-Adir). It’s the perfect movie for viewers looking for an awe-inspiring musical biopic in which the lead actor wholly transforms into the film’s subject.

  • How to Watch The Lion King Franchise in Order

How to Watch The Lion King Franchise in Order

Hakuna Matata, what a wonderful phrase! This guide will show you how to watch The Lion King franchise in both release date order and chronological order, and show you where all the movies and series are streaming online right now.

For anyone looking to watch The Lion King franchise in order, there’s a few things to know. First, there’s technically the original timeline and the live-action timeline – and there’s also Beyonce’s standalone Black is King musical film, which is loosely inspired by the story of The Lion King. If you want to watch the movies and shows in release date order, it would look like this.

The Lion King Movies in Order (Release)

    • The Lion King (1994)
    • The Lion King’s Timon and Pumba (1995-1999)
    • The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride (1998)
    • The Lion King 1 ½ (2004)
    • The Lion Guard (2016-2019)
    • The Lion King (2019)
    • Black is King (2020)
    • Mufasa: The Lion King (2024)

Chronologically, you could technically break up the animated and live-action timelines, but since 2019’s The Lion King is virtually identical to the ‘94 film and Mufasa is a prequel predating everything else, you could also watch a combination of the two, creating one singular chronological timeline (omitting Black is King since that’s a standalone film).

The Lion King Movies in Order (Chronological)

    Mufasa: The Lion King

Mufasa: The Lion King tells the origin story of Simba’s dad Mufasa and how he started off as an orphan and eventually rose to power, becoming king of the pride. But it also tells the story of the pride’s bloodline prince, Taka…who becomes evil and is eventually known as Scar.

The Lion King (1994) / The Lion King (2019)

Loosely based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet, both the 1994 and 2019 Lion King films tell the now-famous tale of the young lion cub Simba, and how he becomes exiled after the death of his father. But as Simba grows up, he discovers he needs to return to the pride and save them from the evil Scar.

    The Liong King 1 ½

The straight-to-video Lion King 1 ½ actually received lots of praise for its humor thanks to its stars Timon and Pumba. The film begins slightly before The Lion King and runs congruently with its plot, showcasing everything Timon and Pumba were doing while Simba was busy fighting Scar and rescuing the pride.

The Lion King’s Timon and Pumba

Also focusing on Timon and Pumba was the aptly named Disney series The Lion King’s Timon and Pumba. Taking place after the first film, the series is one of those “adventure of the week” type shows and sees the duo having wacky hijinks all over the world in places like Fiji, Japan, the Yukon, and more.

The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride

The Lion King 2 follows Simba and Nala’s daughter Kiara. And just like her parents, Kiara runs off to have an adventure where she meets another lion cub along the way. What she doesn’t know is that the cub is part of a lion pride who still believe Scar is their rightful ruler and wish to destroy Simba once and for all.

    The Lion Guard

The series The Lion Guard actually runs congruently with The Lion King 2 and focuses on Kion, Simba and Nala’s son. The series also had a surprisingly robust voice cast that included Gabrielle Union, Rob Lowe, and Lacy Chabert.

Its unique format effectively elevates the stakes and drama.

    The Zone: Survival Mission

One of the most intriguing aspects of Beast Games is how it seemingly transports contestants and viewers into another realm with the $14 million city MrBeast developed for it. Every season, 24 contestants attempt to successfully complete four rounds of increasingly difficult and complex obstacle courses. Top 10 Most Popular TV Shows on Streaming Services in 2024

If you want to make sure you’ve seen all of this year's most popular TV shows, this streaming guide is for you! We've dug deep into JustWatch's streaming data over the last twelve months so we can unveil the most popular TV shows on streaming services throughout 2024 and show you where to stream them online.

What was the most popular TV show to stream in 2024?

According to JustWatch’s popularity score throughout the last twelve months, Shōgun was this year’s most popular TV show on streaming services in the United States. The global hit, which was produced by Hulu and aired exclusively on the platform, beat the likes of Amazon’s hit video-game adaptation Fallout (#2) and Hulu’s other extremely successful show, The Bear (#3).

Shōgun is an adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name, which was previously adapted into a popular mini-series in 1980. The historical drama follows John Blackthorne, an English sailor, as he lands on Japanese shores and becomes embroiled in the county’s political turmoil. The TV show is a historical fiction but takes inspiration from real-world events, most notably the English navigator William Adams and his journey to becoming a samurai under Tokugawa Ieyasu.

In addition to taking the #1 spot as this year’s most popular TV show, Shōgun is also the only non-English language TV show to break into the top ten. The show includes scenes in Japanese, English and Portuguese and even uses miscommunication and translation as an important storytelling tool. Shōgun and Fallout are also the only two shows to make the top ten list with their first season.

  • The Best Adrien Brody Movies and Series and Where to Watch Them

The Best Adrien Brody Movies and Series and Where to Watch Them

Adrien Brody starred in lots of indie films before becoming a breakout star in 2002 with The Pianist. In the film, Brody portrays composer and holocaust survivor Wladysaw Szpilman. His performance was universally praised and in 2003 he took home the Best Actor award at the Oscars. Since then, Brody has starred in comedies, action hits, and more biographical dramas. Check out our guide below to discover the actor’s best movies and TV series and where to stream them.

This guide will show you all of Adrien Brody’s best movies and TV series, and where they’re streaming online right now.

Adrian Brody’s Best Wes Anderson Films

Brody has become a frequent collaborator with the quirky and hipster director Wes Anderson. The filmmaker is known for his use of pastel colors, unique camera angles, heightened shapes, and storylines that mix comedy, adventure, and melancholy. Brody has starred in many of Anderson’s best films including Asteroid City, The French Dispatch, The Darjeeling Limited, and the Oscar-winning The Grand Budapest Hotel.

    Adrien Brody’s Best Action Movies

Brody has also starred in some high-profile action and adventure films too. Most notably he starred in Peter Jackson’s King Kong, which earned over $556 million at the box office and retold the classic story of how the world came to discover the giant gorilla, Kong. He also starred in M. Night Shyamalan’s somewhat controversial movie The Village. I won’t give away any spoilers, but let’s just say the film takes a very unexpected turn…which infuriated some fans. But after the initial shock wears out, the movie is incredibly interesting.

    Adrien Brody’s Best TV Series

Brody hasn’t just worked in films either. In 2021 he starred alongside Schitt’s Creek star Emily Hampshire in the MGM+ series Chapelwaite. The show was inspired by Stephen King’s novel Jeruselam’s Lot and takes place in the 1800s. Brody plays a father who returns to Maine with his children…only to uncover dark secrets.

He also starred in HBO’s hit LA Lakers drama Winning Time, which chronicles the team's rise to fame during the 80s. The show portrayed various real-life figures like Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. On top of his starring roles in various series, Brody also has a prominent role in season 4 of Peaky Blinders, where he played New York mobster Luca Changretta.

  • Top 10 Most Popular Movies on Streaming Services in 2024

Top 10 Most Popular Movies on Streaming Services in 2024

As the year comes to an end, it’s time to unveil the most popular movies on streaming services throughout 2024. Here you can find the complete list of the year’s ten most popular movies and find where you can still watch them all right now online.

What was the most popular movie to stream in 2024?

According to JustWatch’s popularity score throughout the last twelve months, Alex Garland’s dystopian thriller Civil War was this year’s most popular title on streaming services in the United States. The movie was released in theaters on April 12, grossing $68 million domestically, and was released on streaming services shortly after. The A24-produced movie starring Kirsten Dunst beat the likes of Oppenheimer (#2), Poor Things (#3) and Dune: Part Two (#4) to the top spot.

This year’s most popular movies on streaming services shows that streamers in the United States are interested in watching acclaimed non-English language movies; Three of the year’s most popular streaming titles were not predominantly in English, including Godzilla Minus One (Japanese), Anatomy of a Fall (German/English/French) and The Zone of Interest (German). Interestingly, these were also the non-English language titles nominated in popular categories at the Academy Awards in 2024. There is also a strong correlation between streamers’ preferences and the nominations for Best Picture at the Oscars; Six of the top ten most popular streaming titles this year were nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars back in March 2024.

There is also a noticeable trend of live-action movies outperforming animation, in contrast to the year’s domestic box office which featured four animated movies in 2024 (Inside Out 2, Despicable Me 4, Moana 2, Kung Fu Panda 4).

  • Where To Watch Every Pacific Rim Movie and TV Show in Order

Where To Watch Every Pacific Rim Movie and TV Show in Order

The Pacific Rim franchise is set to return with a new prequel series produced by Lionsgate Television and Chronology Entertainment. Viewers interested in catching up with the Kaiju franchise before the new series premieres can use our guide to find out how to watch all the Pacific Rim movies and TV shows in order.

Pacific Rim premiered in 2013, with Guillermo del Toro as director. Del Toro also co-wrote the script with Travis Beacham based on Beacham's story. The film is set in 2025, five years after Kaiju began entering Earth through an interdimensional portal and terrorizing humanity, forcing humans to create their own mechanical kaiju, Jaegers, to fight them. Former Jaeger pilot Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) is grieving the loss of his brother when he’s recruited on a new mission by Marshal Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) to bar the kaiju from Earth for good.

The film was a box office hit and earned high praise for its stunning visuals and putting an artistic, modern-day spin on the monster film genre. It had the potential to start another Kaiju franchise like Toho’s Godzilla or the Monsterverse. Del Toro was working on a sequel before the first film even premiered. However, the sequel was put on hold due to studio conflicts. Ultimately, the movie was greenlit, but del Toro handed directing over to Steven DeKnight because he could not be in China for the sequel’s filming due to his work on The Shape of Water.

The sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprising, finally premiered in 2018. It follows Pentecost’s son, Jake Pentecost (John Boyega), a former Jaeger pilot who has turned to a life of crime. However, when a new kaiju threat arises, Jake’s adoptive sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), gives him a second chance to prove himself and save humanity. Pacific Rim: Uprising received mixed reviews, with critics praising the performances, visuals, and entertainment value but criticizing the story and lack of originality. Unfortunately, the film was a major box office flop.

Although DeKnight has floated ideas of doing a Pacific Rim and Monsterverse crossover film, there are currently no confirmed plans for Pacific Rim 3. However, the franchise has lived on through the small screen. The TV series Pacific Rim: The Black puts an animated, gritty spin on the franchise, following two siblings on a quest to find their parents after Kaiju attacked Australia. Now, a new prequel series is in development, with Arrival screenwriter Eric Heisserer serving as showrunner.

How to watch the Pacific Rim movies and shows in order

Aside from the upcoming prequel series, the films and shows so far follow the same chronological and release date order. Pacific Rim takes place in 2025, while Pacific Rim: Uprising takes place in 2035. While the exact year of Pacific Rim: The Black is uncertain, it takes place several years after the events of Pacific Rim: Uprising. Hence, the chronological/release order order is:

    • Pacific Rim (2013)
    • Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018)
    • Pacific Rim: The Black (2021)

With its gorgeous animation, heartfelt storyline, historical premise, and lovable characters, the show has quickly become one of the most popular anime series.

    Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan is a critically acclaimed anime series set in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity lives in fear of man-eating creatures known as Titans. After a Titan kills Eren Yeager’s mother, he joins the Survey Corps in his quest to kill every Titan. However, his journey leads to him discovering startling truths about himself and humanity. Attack on Titan has a similar premise to Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba of a boy set on vengeance against inhuman creatures but offers a more mature and complex story filled with plot twists and intriguing social and political commentary.

    Bleach

Bleach follows Ichigo Kurosaki, a young man who reluctantly accepts the role of Soul Reaper after another Reaper, Rukia Kuchiki, sacrifices herself to save him. Ichigo becomes immersed in the spirit world as he fights malevolent spirits and helps the departed transition to the afterlife. Demon Slayer’s author, Koyouharu Gotoge, has cited Bleach as one of the inspirations for his work. Both series capitalize on supernatural elements, offer a unique blend of comedy and drama, and boast colorful and gorgeous animation.

    Death Note

Death Note tells the story of Light Yagami, a high school student who discovers a notebook from a shinigami that has the power to kill anyone whose name is written in it. The series explores themes of power, the nature of good and evil, and justice as Light navigates his newfound abilities. It is a good alternative to Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba for viewers looking for a supernatural series that leans more toward psychological thriller than action/adventure.

    Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood follows brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric, who lost their physical bodies after a failed alchemy experiment to bring back their late mother. Together, they vow to find the Philosopher’s Stone to restore their bodies. Like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is an action-packed story with powerful themes of hope, family bonds, determination, and mortality.

    Hell’s Paradise

Hell’s Paradise centers on Gabimaru the Hollow, a man with superhuman abilities who sets out to find the elixir of life in a dangerous and legendary realm. If he finds the elixir, he will be pardoned for his crimes and able to return to his beloved wife. It’s a top-notch shōnen anime series with a slightly darker tone that explores human resilience and determination when motivated by saving a loved one.

    Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu Kaisen boasts a similar setting to Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba in that they both feature secret organizations. Instead of joining the Demon Slayer corps, though, the show follows Yuji Itadori as he joins the Jujutsu Sorcerers in hopes of finding a way to get rid of his curse. The show also parallels Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba with its impeccable blend of action and comedic relief, stunning animation, and strong character arcs.

    My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia follows Izuku Midoriya, a boy born without powers in a world of superpowered individuals. Despite his unique birth, he works tirelessly to gain powers and attend an academy for superheroes. My Hero Academia shares excellent action sequences, animation, and worldbuilding with Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba but offers a slower pace and more upbeat tone.

    Orient

Orient follows teenage boy Musashi, whose society has been overrun by demons who trick people into thinking the samurai are the enemy. However, Musashi recognizes the truth and sets out to fight the demons. Like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, which takes place during the Taishō era, Orient also boasts a historical setting, putting a unique supernatural and mystical spin on the Sengoku period.

    Soul Eater

Soul Eater centers on Maka Albarn, a Death Weapon Meister Academy student who becomes obsessed with turning her human weapon, Soul Eater, into a death scythe. Like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, it is a shōnen anime that centers on training and battle sequences. However, it sets itself apart with its unique gothic tone, complex character development, and exploration of death.

    Tokyo Ghoul

Tokyo Ghoul tells the story of Ken Kaneki, a college student transformed into a half-ghoul after a ghoul attacks him. He struggles to navigate his new identity as the bridge between humans and ghouls as the species’ relations grow more tense and violent. It leans more into the dark fantasy genre than Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and is a bit more mature in its political commentary, but both shows ultimately explore what it means to be human and what would happen if humans lived alongside monsters.

Like Die Hard, Gremlins is one of those unofficial Christmas movies. The film sees teenager Billy get a new and strange pet – Gizmo. After accidentally getting Gizmo wet, more gremlins spawn…but they have a raging temper and havoc ensues. The movie combines horror elements, comedy, and the holidays, creating a truly fun and unique film that even the biggest Scrooge will find amusing.

    Gremlins 2: The New Batch

Hijinks continue in the sequel, The New Batch. This time around, Gizmo is being experimented on in a big Manhattan office building…and once again he gets wet, spawning a riling, chaotic brood of gremlins. The New Batch leans heavier into comedy and almost feels like a cartoon brought to life. It was also a fantastic satire that pulled off meta humor and wit way before Scream made it popular to do so six years later.

Check Out These Great Shows and Movies Similar to Attack on Titan

This guide will show you the best movies and series (including anime) that fans of Attack on Titan will love. It will also let you know where they’re all streaming online right now.

Attack on Titan is one of the most praised mangas and animes ever. The series centers around the race of Eldians, who live in a society protected behind three giant walls. But massive humanoid monsters called Titans begin to attack – and as the series continues, the Titans’ origin adds a level of depth and emotion to this action-packed dystopian story. If you love Attack on Titan, use our guide below to discover more great movies and series you’ll love.

    Wayward Pines

A mysterious society in the future built on lies that hides behind a giant wall to keep monsters away…sound familiar? Any fan of Attack on Titan will immediately recognize that while it’s never been officially talked about, Wayward Pines clearly has taken massive inspiration from the anime. The show’s vibe can be described as Attack on Titan + Twin Peaks + Stranger Things = Wayward Pines.

    Berserk

Berserk follows a warrior in a fictional medieval world and the enemies he comes across. Just like Attack on Titan, the manga and anime can be incredibly bleak and unrelenting, offering social commentary and underlying messages that force viewers to think.

    Pacific Rim

The Titans in Attack on Titan share tons of similarities with Kaijus in monster movies. They’re giant, destructive, unpredictable, and incredibly strong. So fans of the manga and anime should absolutely check out some great kaiju films for a similar feel. In Pacific Rim, humanity decides to fight back in giant robots called Jaegers, leading to explosive battles.

    86 - EIGHTY SIX

In 86, two societies use giant robots to wage warfare against each other. One side believes that the robots are all remotely controlled or autonomous…but in reality, the opponents are actually piloting their robots with real people known as 86 – a marginalized minority group that’s been deemed inhuman – using them like kamikaze bombers, knowing they’ll die. If you loved the tough questions and situations posed in Attack on Titan, you’ll love 86.

    Stardust

Looking for something wildly different, but somehow similar? In Stardust, two worlds are separated by a wall: The mortal world, and a realm full of magic, monsters, and fairytales. The way the wall separates the worlds and the looming danger on the magical side has an oddly similar feel to Attack on Titan, despite the two being very different. If you want something way out of left field that still somehow feels similar to Attack on Titan, this is it.

    Invasion of the Body Snatchers

I won’t be giving away any spoilers, but if you know Attack on Titan, you know there’s a reason why the Titans have such an unrelenting appetite for people (and if you don’t know, then you better watch the show because it’s amazing). For something similar, check out Invasion of the Body Snatchers, or its more modern adaptation, The Faculty, which is about an alien race who needs to use human bodies to survive and replicate.

    Children of Men

If you watch Attack on Titan long enough, you discover it isn’t really a series about monsters, it’s actually about humanity attacking itself…at the detriment of humanity. That raises so many questions and feels so dystopian, giving Attack on Titan a huge dose of emotional weight. For something similar, check out Children of Men. In the movie, humans become infertile and the realization that humanity is dying off drives people to madness, causing society to attack itself.

How To Watch the Moana Movies in Order (And Where To Watch Them)

Since its premiere in 2016, Moana has been one of Disney’s fastest-growing franchises. In addition to receiving a sequel in 2024, Moana will be one of Disney’s newest computer-animated films to score a live-action adaptation, set to premiere in 2026.

Viewers interested in the sequel and live-action adaptation can use our guide to find out how to watch the Moana movies in order and where they’re available to stream online on platforms like Disney+.

In 2016, Moana (Auliʻi Cravalho) became Disney’s first Polynesian heroine. Moana is set on the Polynesian island of Montunui, an island once brought to life by the nature goddess Te Fiti. However, the island begins deteriorating when the demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) steals a pounamu stone known as the Heart of Te Fiti. One thousand years later, the ocean destines Moana to return the heart of Te Fiti to Montunui, sending her on an adventure across the sea to find Maui.

Moana was a smash hit at the box office and received high critical acclaim for its story, voice acting, animation, and soundtrack. At the Oscars, it was nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “How Far I’ll Go.” Not only was it a beautifully animated, heartwarming, and unique story, but it was also hailed as a progressive and diverse triumph, with its nod to Polynesian culture and feminist themes.

In early 2024, Disney surprised audiences by announcing that Moana 2 was set to premiere that year. Initially, the studio had been developing a TV series, Moana: The Series, before the project was reworked into the sequel film. Moana 2 sees the return of Moana and Maui as they set out to find the lost island of Motufetu and restore mortals’ connection to the ocean, which was severed by the vengeful god Nalo (Tofiga Fepulea'i). So far, Moana 2 has exceeded box office predictions and earned praise for its stunning, vibrant animation and family-friendly entertainment.

Following the sequel, viewers won’t have to wait long for more Moana. A live-action adaptation of the original film, Moana, is currently in development and set to premiere in 2026. The film will see Johnson reprise his role as the live-action Maui, while Catherine Lagaʻaia has been cast as Moana.

From Arrival to Enchanted, These Are the Best Amy Adams Movies You Can Watch Now

This guide will show you the best Amy Adams movies and where you can find them all streaming online right now.

Amy Adams is one of the most talented actresses of our generation. So far, she’s earned 6 Oscar nominations, 2 Emmy nominations, and 10 Golden Globe nominations, winning two of them. From comedies to dramas, thrillers, and even sci-fi epics, Adams has proven she can land a solid performance in a variety of genres. Check out our guide below to find out Amy Adams’ best movies (and a series) and where you can watch them online right now.

    Nightbitch

Amy Adams is already receiving praise for her film Nightbitch, which sees her turning into a dog at night. The movie is a sly commentary on womanhood and the emotions many women have to hide to appease the societal norm. Nightbitch won numerous awards at film festivals around the world before its theatrical premiere.

    Arrival

One of Adams’ most iconic roles is in Arrival, where an alien race arrives on Earth – but their intention is peace and understanding, not global warfare. However, the humans are too consumed by fear to give the aliens a chance, so it’s up to Adams to communicate with the extraterrestrials and find a way to ensure peace.

    Enchanted

One of Adams’ most notable hits is the Disney film Enchanted. The comedy pokes fun at classic Disney movies like Cinderella and Snow White and turns the tropes on their head by placing a fairytale princess in modern-day Manhattan.

    Drop Dead Gorgeous

In the cult classic Drop Dead Gorgeous, a beauty pageant is taking place in a small Minnesota town…but one of the contestants has murderous intentions. The film is a hilarious spoof of pageant culture, femininity, the Midwest, and how far desperate people will go to feel superior.

    Doubt

Based on the 2004 play of the same name, the Oscar-nominated film Doubt tackles a heavy topic and leaves viewers with big questions. A priest is accused of molesting a young boy at a Catholic school, but there’s little evidence to support it. The movie forces audiences to consider whether it’s a true case of abuse, or if they’re allegations against a gay man due to prejudice.

    Vice

Amy Adams earned both an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination for her role in Vice, which tells the story of former vice president Dick Cheney. The film depicts his life in politics and business and shows how he had a massive role in favoring corporations over citizens. It also dives into his numerous scandals that cost lives and livelihoods.

    Julie & Julia

In Julie & Julia, Amy Adams plays real-life blogger Julie Powell, who decided to cook every recipe in Julia Child’s iconic cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking. The film depicts Powell’s journey side-by-side with Julia Child’s life story and her time in France.

    Sharp Objects

Sharp Objects is a miniseries, not a movie, but it was widely acclaimed and earned Adams an Emmy and Golden Globe nomination, so all fans should check it out. In the miniseries, an alcoholic journalist (Adams) returns to her rural hometown to investigate the murder of two young girls. But returning home brings out old wounds and challenges her sanity.

  • The Best Christmas Comedies You Can Stream Right Now

The Best Christmas Comedies You Can Stream Right Now

This guide will let you know all the great Christmas comedy movies that are streaming online right now.

Yes, the holidays are the happiest and most joyful time of the year…but it’s also a time for crazy crowds, bickering families, and Scrooges all around. That’s probably why so many of us need a good Christmas comedy to get us through the holiday season. Luckily, thanks to streaming services like Max, Netflix, and Disney+, among many others, there are lots of great Christmas comedies streaming right now. Check out our guide below to discover some of the best.

    Home Alone

Home Alone is one of the most iconic Christmas movies ever and centers around a somewhat awful family who accidentally forgets their son as they leave for Paris. Now, home alone, Kevin must fight off a pair of burglars using some hilariously brutal homemade traps.

    Christmas with the Kranks

Initially bashed as a horrible and corny holiday movie, Christmas with the Kranks has become a classic simply for how awful it is. In the movie, two parents decide to skip Christmas when they discover their daughter won’t be coming home. What ensues is a full-on war between them and their Christmas-loving neighbors.

    The Bitch Who Stole Christmas

Queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race came together to create an irreverent spoof of cheesy Hallmark Christmas movies. In the film, a big city journalist visits a small town for a juicy holiday story…only to uncover a drama-filled nefarious plot. The Bitch Who Stole Christmas stars queens like RuPaul, Peppermint, Gotmik, and Ginger Minj.

    A Christmas Story

“You’ll shoot your eye out, kid!” has become an iconic line that’s shouted yearly at Christmastime thanks to A Christmas Story. Taking place in 1940, the movie is an ode to how Midwestern families celebrated Christmas back in the day. The craziest part is how relatable the movie remains to this day.

    Christmas Vacation

Nothing can ever go right for the Griswold family…but let’s be honest here, that’s the whole reason we love them so much. In Christmas Vacation, the family hopes to celebrate the best holiday ever, but instead they’re met with homeless relatives, exploding sewers, electrocuted cats, and one hell of a Scroogey boss. Ah, Christmas!

    Mixed Nuts

This mostly unknown cult classic holiday movie centers around the employees of a suicide hotline on Christmas. Also, there’s a serial killer on the loose known as the Seaside Strangler. But somehow, despite all the terror and death around them, this group of misfits learns the true meaning of the season. Plus, Mixed Nuts stars comedy legends Steve Martin and Madeline Kahn.

    Jingle All the Way

Jingle All the Way poked fun at the way consumerism has taken over the world and shows a father, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, who feels that getting his son the perfect present is more important than actually spending time with him. Even crazier, just weeks after the movie’s release, the Tickle Me Elmo craze hit America, and scenes from Jingle All the Way ended up playing out in real life.

    A Bad Moms Christmas

Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn all reprised their Bad Moms roles for this holiday sequel. Even better, with it being the holidays, the moms are forced to spend time with their own moms. Other notable names in the cast include Wanda Sykes, Christine Baranski, and Christina Applegate.

  • 20 Best Movies Like Gladiator II You Can Watch Right Now

20 Best Movies Like Gladiator II You Can Watch Right Now

Gladiator II, the sequel to Ridley Scott’s influential Gladiator, has finally arrived on the big screen. Set 16 years after the time of Maximus Deridius (Russell Crowe), the film follows a new tragic hero, Lucius Verus (Paul Mescal), who is enslaved by the Roman Army. When he catches the eye of former slave Macrinus (Denzel Washington), he realizes the gladiatorial games may be the key to getting revenge.

Gladiator II is a worthy successor, with stunning visuals, powerful performances, and bloody vengeance, even if it doesn’t eclipse the original film. Viewers interested in more movies with the scale, historical elements, and depth of Gladiator II can use our guide to find similar movies available to stream online on platforms like Starz, Paramount+, and more.

Best historical epics like Gladiator II

    Ben-Hur (1959)

Ben-Hur (1959) is a historical epic that follows Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston), a Jew whose life is torn apart by his Roman childhood friend, Messala (Stephen Boyd). As Judah goes from slavery to becoming a champion charioteer, he continues seeking vengeance. At the time of its release, Ben-Hur was the most expensive film ever made, and it shows through its awe-inspiring scale, iconic chariot scenes, and dazzling sets. Like Gladiator II, it transports viewers to the past and offers a unique blend of vengeance, romance, and heroism.

    Gladiator

You can’t get closer to Gladiator II than Gladiator. The original movie follows Maximus, a Roman general meant to be heir to the emperor. When the emperor’s son, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), kills Maximus’ family and enslaves him, Maximus begins advancing through the gladiatorial games in his quest for vengeance. Gladiator gained high critical acclaim and revived the historical epic genre in Hollywood. It’s a must-see for Ridley Scott and historical epic fans.

    Spartacus

Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus premiered in 1960 and tells the story of Spartacus (Kirk Douglas), an enslaved man sold to a businessman for the gladiatorial games. However, he soon uses his training against his captors, leading a slave rebellion. Similar to Gladiator II, Spartacus is a stunning spectacle with powerful performances and beautiful cinematography that delves into Ancient Rome in a blend of entertainment and emotion.

The Fall of the Roman Empire

The Fall of the Roman Empire was, essentially, the Gladiator of the 1960s. The film follows Livius (Stephen Boyd), a soldier meant to inherit the throne from Marcus Aurelius (Alec Guinness) until the corrupt Commodus (Christopher Plummer) takes over. As corruption continues seeping into the empire, Livius challenges Commodus’ reign. The Fall of the Roman Empire shares many plot and thematic similarities to Gladiator and Gladiator II and includes one of the most expansive film sets ever constructed.

    Troy

Troy is a historical epic loosely based on Homer’s Iliad. The film explores the Trojan War, which breaks out when Trojan prince Paris (Orlando Bloom) has an affair with Sparta King Menelaus’ (Brendan Gleeson) wife. Menelaus, seeking vengeance, soon recruits King Agamemnon (Brian Cox) and the warrior Achilles (Brad Pitt) to take Troy. While Troy has received criticism for being unfaithful to its source material, it is still a bold, entertaining spectacle with top-notch action sequences and complex heroes.

Best Revenge movies like Gladiator II

    The Count of Monte-Cristo (2024)

Based on Alexander Dumas’ novel of the same name, The Count of Monte-Cristo tells the story of Edmond Dantès (Pierre Niney), who spends years in prison after three jealous men conspire to put him away. Upon escaping, Dantès gains status and riches while plotting his revenge. Both Gladiator II and The Count of Monte-Cristo are thrilling revenge sagas with unique historical settings, brisk paces, and stunning set designs and cinematography.

    The Last Duel

The Last Duel shares both a revenge plot and director with Gladiator II. Scott’s historical drama follows squires Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) and Jacques le Gris (Adam Driver), who become involved in a bitter feud after Jacques assaults Jean’s wife, Marguerite (Jodie Comer). Like Gladiator II, The Last Duel is a big-budget feud tale but also thoughtfully examines serious themes of misogyny and justice.

    The Nightingale

The Nightingale is a historical thriller that centers on Clare Carroll (Aisling Franciosi), an Irish convict who enlists the help of Aboriginal tracker Billy (Baykali Ganambarr) to hunt down and exact vengeance on the British soldier who destroyed her family. The Nightingale isn’t always easy to watch, but, like Gladiator II, it utilizes a brutal storyline to examine themes of discrimination and justice.

    The Northman

The Northman follows Prince Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård), whose life is upended as a boy when his uncle kills his father and abducts his mother. As a man, Amleth sets out to fulfill his vow to save his mother, kill his uncle, and avenge his father. Through Amleth, The Northman gives viewers a hero as brutal and inspiring as Lucius in a bold tale of romance and revenge.

The allied forces worked together to rescue the troops, ultimately saving over 300,000 people.

    The Ghost and the Darkness

The Field Museum in Chicago has the taxidermied bodies of two infamous lions known as the Tsavo Man-Eaters. During the construction of the Kenya-Uganda Railroad, the two lions became maneaters. The lions began eating the construction workers and as the months went on, the lions got bolder and bolder, eventually attacking almost every single night. The Ghost and the Darkness tells the terrifying true story of surviving the lion attacks.

    Everest

Everest chronicles the catastrophic events of the 1996 Mount Everest Disaster. A group of ill-prepared climbers were stranded during a blizzard, creating a tragic disaster that caused two hiking expeditions to fight for their lives, ultimately leaving eight people dead. Zero Dark Thirty

Scoring five Oscar nominations, Zero Dark Thirty centers on the search for Osama bin Laden after the September 11th attacks, and his eventual death by SEAL Team Six. The movie offered closure for many Americans after the 9/11 attacks and depicts a crucial moment of Obama’s presidency.

    Pompeii

In 79 CE, the Mount Vesuvius volcano in southern Italy erupted, covering the city of Pompeii in toxic gasses, extreme temperatures, and mounds of ash, killing thousands who seemingly had little time to escape or prepare. The movie shows the final days of ancient Pompeii before being completely destroyed.

    Pearl Harbor

In 2001, Michael Bay created a big-budget epic film depicting the bombing of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii starring Ben Affleck, Josh Harnett, and Kate Beckinsale. It’s a bit of a Dawson’s Creek take on the infamous event, but that also helps make the movie more appealing to a wider audience who otherwise might not watch a historical war film.

    Troy

Glossy, sexy, and hypersaturated, 2004’s Troy told the story of the legendary Trojan War. Many scholars debate whether the war actually happened or if it was just a collection of stories that Homer compiled together, but the fact is that its legacy has certainly become a real part of history.

Where To Watch Paul Mescal’s Best TV Shows and Movies

Paul Mescal had big shoes to fill when he was tapped for the lead role of Gladiator II. 24-years after Gladiator reawakened the historical epic genre and took home five Oscars, Mescal was chosen to carry on the original’s legacy in the long-awaited sequel. He rose to the task, offering viewers another tragic hero to look up to in the role of the gladiator Lucius Verus, who carries out his own mission of vengeance sixteen years after the time of Maximus Meridius (Russell Crowe).

If viewers find themselves awed by Mescal’s brutal, powerful, and emotionally raw performance as Lucius, they can use our guide to find out where to stream all of his best movies and TV shows.

Paul Mescal booked his first Hollywood role in 2020 with Normal People. An adaptation of Sally Rooney’s bestselling book of the same name, Normal People follows Connell Waldron (Mescal) and Marianne Sheridan (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a couple who meet in high school and, despite being quite toxic together, can’t seem to avoid each other as they enter and navigate adulthood. The series earned high critical acclaim for Mescal and Edgar-Jones’ vulnerable, emotional performances and its ambitious psychological romance tale.

Normal People is easily Mescal’s best TV role. His best movie role so far is the touching coming-of-age film Aftersun. The film follows Sophie (Frankie Corio) and her father, Callum (Mescal), on their last vacation together when Sophie is 11 years old. As an adult, Sophie reflects on the memories of that vacation to understand her father and their relationship in the present. The movie, a semi-autobiographical story from director Charlotte Wells’, is beautiful and searing as it poignantly explores father-daughter relationships and the nature of memories. For his powerful role as a young father navigating depression, Mescal was nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars.

Mescal also garnered recognition for his role in the romance film All of Us Strangers, in which he portrays Harry, the love interest of screenwriter Adam (Andrew Scott). Both Mescal and Scott offer potent performances in this mesmerizing and raw exploration of grief and love.

The psychological drama tells the startling tale of Aileen O’Hara (Emily Watson), a woman who lies to protect her son, Brian (Mescal). However, the lie soon threatens to tear up her town, family, and life. Viewers see a different side of Mescal as a cold and remorseless man in a moving tale about parental love and enablement. • Where To Watch Ridley Scott’s Gladiator Movies in Order

Where To Watch Ridley Scott’s Gladiator Movies in Order

After a 24-year wait, the sequel to Ridley Scott’s critically acclaimed Gladiator has arrived on the big screen. While numerous films and TV shows have tackled ancient Rome, Gladiator stands out as one of the most recognizable works on the subject. Stunningly recreating Rome with an epic tale of a tragic hero, Gladiator has been hailed as a masterpiece. Now that the sequel has premiered, viewers can use our guide to find out where and how to watch the Gladiator movies in order.

Gladiator premiered in 2000 as a film adaptation of the novel Those About To Die by Daniel P. Mannix. The film follows Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe), a Roman general who has earned the favor of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris). However, when the Emperor’s jealous son, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), kills Maximus’ family and sells him into slavery, Maximus rises through the ranks of the arena as a gladiator in his pursuit of vengeance.

The film was released at a time when “sword and sandal” historical epics were losing steam in Hollywood. However, Gladiator quickly rejuvenated the dormant genre, as it was a smash hit at the box office and ultimately took home five Oscars. It transported viewers to ancient Rome in a way that had never been done before and ambitiously attracted a broad audience of men and women with its mixture of violence, romance, and tragedy.

Given the success of Gladiator and Hollywood’s renewed interest in historical epics, Scott began developing a sequel soon after the original’s release. Unfortunately, settling on a story was difficult due to the original's decisive ending. Once Paramount Pictures purchased DreamWorks Pictures in 2006, the sequel was shelved until 2018. In 2024, Gladiator II finally arrived in theaters.

Gladiator II takes place 16 years after the original film and follows Lucius (Paul Mescal), the son of Maximus’ former lover, Lucilla (Connie Nielsen). Lucius lives a quiet life in Numidia until the Roman Army invades and enslaves him. He soon catches the eye of former slave Macrinus (Denzel Washington), who pushes him into the gladiatorial games by promising the opportunity for vengeance. The film has earned praise for its nostalgia, entertainment value, powerful performances, and ambitious scale.

Scott has expressed interest in developing a Gladiator III to continue following Lucius’ story. However, whether it will become a reality depends on how well Gladiator II performs.

  • From Alien to Gladiator, These Are Ridley Scott’s Best Movies

From Alien to Gladiator, These Are Ridley Scott’s Best Movies

This guide will show you Ridley Scott’s best movies like Alien and Blade Runner, and let you know where you can stream them online right now.

Ridley Scott is (usually) an acclaimed director who has made some of the biggest films in Hollywood history. Granted, he also sometimes has some big misses, like with G.I. Jane and 1492. But personally, I think any ambitious filmmaker should have a few duds or misunderstood films to show they’ve taken risks. Plus, his filmography has way more hits than misses, proving that Scott truly is a gifted director. Use our guide below to find out all of Ridley Scott’s best movies and where to watch them.

    Alien

Scott will always be best known for his 1979 sci-fi thriller Alien. The movie launched Sigourney Weaver into superstardom and sees the crew of the spaceship Nostromo fight off a xenomorphic alien that has been gestating inside one of the crew. For great action, scares, and sci-fi, it’s a must-watch.

    Blade Runner

Harrison Ford starred in Scott’s next big hit about a futuristic world where humans live alongside bioengineered humanoids called “replicants”. The film examines what it means to be human and alive. Although it had a so-so release back in the ‘80s, it has since become a classic with a great legacy (and tons of alternate versions).

    Thelma & Louise

Playing with the ideas of gender and feminism, Thelma & Louise sees two friends on a road trip. But after a stranger tries to rape one of them, the girls fight back and ultimately find themselves running from the law. The movie ended up getting nominated for 6 Oscars, including Best Director for Scott.

    Gladiator

Love, loss, corruption, and conspiracy are all at the center of Gladiator’s plot. In the film, Russell Crowe plays a general who is unfairly sentenced to death. But after he escapes the plot, he finds himself sold into slavery as a gladiator and works his way up the ranks until he can one day face the Emperor of Rome himself. Scott also received a Best Director nom for the film, and it won the prestigious Best Picture award in 2001.

    Hannibal

Scott directed the Silence of the Lambs sequel Hannibal in 2001. In the movie, Julianne Moore took over the role of Clarice from Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins reprised his iconic role of Hannibal Lecter. In Hannibal, the cat-and-mouse chase between the two continues, leading to more sinister, macabre madness.

    Black Hawk Down

Set during the Somalia famine, Black Hawk Down tells the true story of the Battle of Mogadishu. During the conflict, a Black Hawk helicopter was shot down and the survivors had to escape on foot. The film earned Scott another Best Director nomination and became a box-office hit.

    The Martian

Inspired by the novel of the same name, The Martian sees a NASA crew exploring Mars when a massive storm threatens their lives. Desperate to escape, they’re forced to leave one astronaut (Matt Damon) on the planet. He then has to try and create a livable habitat for himself until help can arrive. The Martian received 7 Oscar nominations including Best Picture.

    Gladiator II

Scott’s long-awaited sequel to Gladiator is also being called one of his best. The film has received positive reviews and picks up over 20 years after the first movie, now focusing on (spoiler alert) Maximus’ son.

Check Out Ariana Grande’s Best Roles in Movies and TV (and Where to Watch Them)

This guide will show you all of Ariana Grande’s best roles in movies and TV shows, including where you can stream them online right now.

Ariana Grande might be one of the biggest pop stars of our generation, but she’s also building a surprisingly robust acting resume as well. In fact, she first broke out into stardom thanks to her Nickelodeon series Victorious, where she starred alongside Victoria Justice. Since then she’s starred in both movies and more television series. Use our guide below to discover Ariana Grande’s best roles and find out where to watch them online.

    Victorious

Victorious follows teenager Tori Vega, who gets accepted to a prestigious performing arts school. The series follows her and her friends on their various adventures. In the show, Grande plays Cat Valentine, Tori’s always-bubbly friend and classmate.

    Sam & Cat

Grande’s Cat ended up getting her own spinoff series alongside Jenette McCurdy. In the show, the duo decide to get after-school jobs as babysitters in Los Angeles…which naturally leads to pure hilarity and chaos.

    Scream Queens

Just as Ariana Grande’s music career started booming, she also starred in the Ryan Murphy horror comedy series Scream Queens. The show centers around the Chanels at Wallace University, who find themselves in the middle of a mystery…and a serial killing spree.

    Hairspray Live!

Part of NBC’s beloved live theater performance series, Grande was joined by stars like Martin Short, Dove Cameron, and Jennifer Hudson to bring John Waters’ bonkers and hilarious musical to life in front of the entire country. Grande played Penny Pingleton, who was portrayed by Amanda Bynes in the film.

    Don’t Look Up

2021’s Don’t Look Up was a massive rebuke of America’s regression and the country’s insistence on ignoring science and facts. In the movie, Grande plays the shallow and ditzy pop star Riley – a critique of the way society is more obsessed with celebrities than actual issues.

    Swindle

The Nick movie Swindle focuses on a group of teenagers who plan a heist to steal back a valuable baseball card from a pawn shop after the owner purchases it from one of them and then plans to resell it for over $1 million. It’s a hilarious take on heist films like Oceans 11.

    Ariana Grande: Dangerous Woman Diaries

In 2018, Grande launched her own YouTube series Ariana Grande: Dangerous Woman Diaries. The series gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at the production of her album Sweetener and her massive Dangerous Woman Tour. The show’s final episode “One Love” focuses on the aftermath of Ariana’s Manchester concert bombing.

    Wicked

Easily the largest role of Grande’s acting career so far, she took on the role of Glinda the “Good Witch” in the Hollywood adaptation of Wicked. Releasing in two parts, the second half is set to premiere at the end of 2025.

  • Where To Watch Every Wizard of Oz Movie and TV Show In Order

Where To Watch Every Wizard of Oz Movie and TV Show In Order

The world of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is returning to the big screen with Wicked. Based on the stage musical of the same name, Wicked follows Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande) in the Land of Oz as they strike up an unlikely friendship and head down a path that will one day see them become the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the North, respectively. For those with a renewed interest in The Wizard of Oz following Wicked, this guide will explain how and where to watch every film and TV adaptation in release order.

The most famous adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s 1900 children’s book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, is, of course, the 1939 musical The Wizard of Oz. In the movie, Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) and her dog Toto awaken in a mysterious land after a tornado hits Kansas. Desperate to go home, Dorothy sets out to find the mystical Wizard of Oz (Frank Morgan) and receives help along the way from the Tin Man (Jack Haley), Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), and Scarecrow (Roy Bolger). The film achieved high critical acclaim, propelling Garland to stardom and taking home an Oscar for its original song, “Over the Rainbow.”

While most are familiar with the 1939 adaptation, attempts to adapt Baum’s book began as early as 1908 with the lost film The Fairylogue and Radio-Plays. The earliest surviving adaptation is the silent film The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1910). Baum was involved in several early adaptations, writing the screenplay for The Patchwork Girl of Oz, The Magic Cloak of Oz, and His Majesty, The Scarecrow of Oz.

Following the 1939 movie’s success, further adaptations struggled to top it. However, there were some notable ones. The animated Journey to Oz flourished on television and featured Garland’s daughter, Liza Minnelli, as the voice of Dorothy Gale, who returns to Oz after experiencing another tornado. In 1978, The Wiz offered a unique spin on the story, seeing Dorothy (Diana Ross) as a 24-year-old teacher whisked off to the Land of Oz and featuring Michael Jackson as Scarecrow. Despite being a critical and commercial failure at the time, the musical is now a cult classic. Anime fans may also be intrigued by Toho’s 1982 animated take on the story, The Wizard of Oz.

In addition to Wicked, some notable modern-day adaptations include Tin Man, Emerald City, and Oz the Great and Powerful. Tin Man is a miniseries that follows DG (Zooey Deschanel), a waitress in Kansas who is transported to the Outer Zone (O.Z.), where she comes up against the evil sorceress Azkadellia (Kathleen Robertson). Emerald City is a dark and brooding take on the story that sees Adria Arjona’s Dorothy Gale at the center of life-altering prophecy, while Oz the Great and Powerful is a spiritual prequel to the 1939 movie. The 2013 film follows Oz (James Franco), who is whisked away to the Land of Oz and seeks to fulfill his destiny to become the wizard of the land.

    Star Wars: Andor

Star Wars: Andor is a prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story that centers on Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) as he rises from a petty thief to one of the Rebel Alliance’s most influential figures. The series has earned high praise for its gritty premise and sophisticated political commentary. Both Star Wars: Andor and Dune: Prophecy are mature sci-fi series that explore people who operate in a morally gray area and how one person’s trauma, beliefs, and motives can impact the universe's future.

    The Acolyte

Similar to Dune: Prophecy, The Acolyte is a tale of two incredibly powerful sisters, Osha and Mai (Amandla Stenberg). Dune

    Doctor Sleep

Apple TV+’s critically acclaimed original series Silo is back for season 2. The show is a unique dystopian sci-fi series with elements of mystery and follows engineer Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson), who lives in a 144-level underground silo with 10,000 other people and must solve the puzzle of her people’s past and present, including whether the outside is inhabitable.

Viewers looking for more dystopian sci-fi/mystery series after Silo season 2 can use our guide to find similar movies and TV shows streaming on platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV+, and more.

    Best TV shows like Silo

    Brave New World

Brave New World follows the residents of New London, whose stability relies on a stringent caste system and predetermined lives and roles for each individual. However, the supposed “utopia” begins to show cracks when John the Savage (Alden Ehrenreich) arrives and introduces its residents to new ideas. In addition to stunning visual effects and dramatic appeal, Brave New World mirrors Silo with its story of New London inhabitants' desire for truth and freedom.

    Counterpart

Counterpart is perfect for viewers looking for a mind-bending sci-fi mystery similar to Silo. The show follows Howard Silk (J. K. Simmons), a man who does seemingly meaningless office work for a spy agency. As his career winds down, he’s startled to realize his agency has been harboring a secret of a parallel universe. Counterpart is among the most underrated sci-fi mystery series with brilliant performances, an ambitious premise, and thrilling twists.

    Dark Matter

Dark Matter is another excellent sci-fi series from Apple TV+. The show sees physicist Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton) forced to travel through a series of alternate realities to return home. Like Silo, it’s a top-notch, mind-bending, and mesmerizing sci-fi series where things are never quite as they seem.

    Fallout

Based on the video game series of the same name, Fallout follows Lucy (Ella Purnell), a girl raised in an underground bunker where society dwells after a nuclear war. However, when violence breaks out in her unit, she’s forced to go to the surface world, where she begins to realize much of what she’s been told of the world is a lie. Fallout boasts a similar premise to Silo but leans more into action and worldbuilding rather than sci-fi.

    Severance

In Severance, Mark Scout (Adam Scott) works for a shadowy company that performs procedures on its employees to give them two separate consciousnesses: one activated at work and one for their personal lives. After the mysterious disappearance of one of his colleagues, Mark sets out to discover what his company truly does. Like Silo, it offers a bold sci-fi premise and slow-burn mystery but also probes additional concepts of memory and the corporate world.

    Best movies like Silo

    Divergent

Divergent is set in a futuristic dystopian Chicago, where society is divided into five factions, each of which values a different attribute. Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley), originally from the selfless faction Abnegation, decides at age 16 to join the brave faction Dauntless, where she begins to explore what it truly means that she boasts attributes of multiple factions. Divergent is an excellent alternative to Silo for viewers looking for a sci-fi dystopian mystery geared toward younger viewers.

    Oblivion

In Oblivion, Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) believes he’s one of the last inhabitants left on Earth, which has been ravaged by an extraterrestrial invasion. While preparing to depart Earth for a space colony, though, he makes a discovery that causes him to question his entire reality. It’s a trippy sci-fi thriller, a gorgeous visual experience, and similar to Silo in that it challenges viewers to determine what’s real and not.

    Snowpiercer

Instead of a silo, the characters in Snowpiercer are stuck on a globe-circling train that carries what remains of humanity after the second ice age. The train is segregated between the elite and non-elite until, one day, Curtis Everett (Chris Evans) stages a revolution to better the living conditions of most underprivileged residents. It’s an action-packed and refreshing take on the human extinction and post-apocalypse genre.

    The Maze Runner

The Maze Runner follows Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), who awakens with amnesia inside a place called The Glade, enclosed by massive stone walls. Along with the other residents, he must try to solve a gigantic maze believed to be the only way to escape. The Maze Runner is an excellent choice for viewers who especially enjoyed the overarching mystery in Silo and the concept of people in a restricted society forced to puzzle out the truth.

    Twelve Monkeys

Like Silo, 12 Monkeys takes place in a world where society lives underground after the earth is rendered unlivable by a virus. Years after society reverted underground, prisoner James Cole (Bruce Willis) is tasked with traveling back in time to find the virus's origin. It boasts a Silo-like premise with a unique time-travel element, bold plot twists, and brilliant performances.

How To Watch the Yellowstone TV Shows in Order

After almost a two-year wait, the last half of Yellowstone season 5 is here, marking the end of the critically acclaimed neo-Western series. Although the original series is wrapping up, Yellowstone will live on as the show has become a full-fledged franchise with numerous spinoff series. Those interested in catching up with the Yellowstone franchise can use our guide to find out how to stream the shows in chronological and release date order.

Taylor Sheridan and John Linson created Yellowstone in 2018. The series follows rancher John Dutton III (Kevin Costner) and his family, who own the largest ranch in Montana. Running the Dutton Yellowstone ranch isn’t easy as John struggles with complicated family dynamics, antics from corrupt land developers, and conflicts with bordering Indian reservations. Yellowstone earned critical acclaim for its performances, beautiful setting, and unique blend of a family drama and modern-day Western tale.

Yellowstone establishes John as a sixth-generation Dutton, meaning there is plenty of Dutton family history to delve into. As a result, the show already boasts two prequels that focus on older generations of the Dutton family. The first prequel was the miniseries 1883, which sees James Dillar Dutton (Tim McGraw), Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill), and their children join a wagon expedition led by Shea Brennan (Sam Elliott) and head to Montana post-Civil War. It earned praise for returning to the origins of the Dutton family ranch and offering viewers a true Western.

The second prequel is 1923, which premiered in 2022. As the title suggests, the show takes place in 1923. It follows James’ older brother, Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford), and his wife, Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren), as they navigate Montana through the Prohibition and Great Depression while raising two of their nephews as their own. With powerful performances from Ford and Mirren and an interesting blend of family drama and history, 1923 secured a season 2 renewal.

A third prequel, 1944, is in development, although cast and plot details remain under wraps. Meanwhile, the first sequel series to Yellowstone is also in development. Initially titled 2024, the sequel series has been retitled The Madison. It will star Michelle Pfeiffer as Stacy Clyburn, a woman who moves with her family to Montana after losing her husband.

One more Yellowstone spinoff series is in development: 6666. The title appears to refer to the 6666 Ranch featured in Yellowstone. If set in the modern day, many expect the series will follow Jimmy Hurdstrom (Jefferson White), who left the Yellowstone ranch to work at 6666 in Texas. However, no cast or plot details have been confirmed.

How to watch the Yellowstone shows in order

It is recommended that viewers watch the series in release date order, starting with the original show. However, viewers can also watch the series in chronological order. So, one would watch the prequels before Yellowstone, followed by The Madison. The only show that doesn’t fit into the chronological order is 6666 since it’s unclear when it takes place. The chronological order for the Yellowstone shows is as follows:

    • 1883
    • 1923
    • 1944
    • Yellowstone
    • The Madison

This guide will show you 20 awesome TV series and movies that are perfect for fans of Netflix’s animated series Arcane thanks to their similar stories, animation styles, and more. Find out where to watch them on streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video, Peacock, and more.

Netflix’s Emmy-winning animated series Arcane is set in the League of Legends universe and has become a hit with not just gamers, but viewers as a whole. The show is loaded with action and drama, and takes place in two very different cities – the glitzy metropolis of Piltover and the gritty undercity of Zaun. Leading the series are sisters Vi and Jinx, whose lives took radically different paths…but in the show, they converge once more. Check out our guide below to discover the best shows and movies like Arcane that are streaming online right now.

Movies & Shows Like Arcane About Class Struggles

    Elysium

One of Arcane’s most prominent themes is the battle between the haves and have-nots in the cities of Piltover and Zaun. Another great sci-fi tale about class struggle is the film Elysium. In the movie, the rich and powerful live aboard a space station called Elysium, while the poor are forced to suffer on the barren, diseased remnants of Earth. But a group of rebels fight for equality.

    Snowpiercer

Another great sci-fi film about class struggle is Snowpiercer. The movie is set in a dystopian future where the last remnants of humanity live aboard a giant ever-moving train. But the train is separated by class, with the poor forced to live with nothing in the back, while the rich enjoy life’s finer things up front. But a rebellion brings chaos to the train.

    The Hunger Games

The most famous example of class struggle – with a good dose of action too – is The Hunger Games. In the film series, Panem is broken up into districts, with some being home to the wealthy and powerful, and others being inhabited by the poor working class. To distract the nation from the rampant disparity, the government created a battle royale called the Hunger Games.

    Video Game Adaptations like Arcane

    Twisted Metal

Set in an alternate history, Twisted Metal sees a post-apocalyptic America heavily fractured by crime and greed. The wealthy live safely behind walled cities, while everyone else is forced to scavenge in the barren wastelands. The show offers a good dose of action and social commentary, perfect for Arcane fans.

    Fallout

Another video game adaptation that has lots of action, as well as themes of class struggle and corruption, is Fallout. In the show, a young girl who has spent her entire life in an underground vault must venture to the surface to find her kidnapped father.

    Super Mario Bros.

Unlike the colorful animated 2023 movie, the original 1993 Mario movie takes place in a cyberpunk underground city controlled by corruption. Anyone who loves the undercity of Zaun in Arcane will appreciate this truly unique take on the Nintendo classic.

    Animated Series like Arcane

    Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Also inspired by a video game, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has great colors and animation. The series takes place in the crime-riddled and corrupt Night City and follows high-tech smugglers known as edgerunners. Fans of the game will love diving further into the story with this series.

    The Legend of Vox Machina

Created by the team at Critical Role and inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, The Legend of Vox Machina is loaded with adventure, action, adult humor, and a mature animation style. It also does a great job at including lots of D&D Easter eggs, which players will love.
