Bridget Jones: Movie Order & Where to Watch All the Movies

Published on

Everyone’s favorite disaster at love who actually ended up finding her fairy tale romance is now back, and she’s sadly looking for new love after the tragic death of her husband, Mark Darcy. But it wouldn’t be Bridget Jones without some shenanigans, a lot of friendship and a relatable look at what being a woman is like—no matter your age.

The first movie was released in what was still the golden age of rom-coms, with movies like The Wedding Planner, Serendipity, Kate & Leopold and even The Princess Diaries also releasing that same year. But outside of The Princess Diaries, which would go on to have a sequel, no rom-com has had the staying power Bridget Jones has. Perhaps that’s just because Renée Zellweger is that good, though it might also be because we can truly believe Bridget would get into each and every one of these messes, movie after movie, and come out on top.

If you want to know in what order you should watch the four movies in this universe, here’s where to watch all the Bridget Jones movies, in the order they were released.

Bridget Jones’s Diary

Loosely based on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, or at least inspired by Colin Firth’s character of Mr. Darcy in the BBC miniseries adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, Bridget Jones’s Diary is basically an alternate universe version of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, set in the future. If you like grumpy heroes, bubbly and relatable but often messy heroines and a happy ending then Bridget Jones’s Diary is the movie for you. And bonus, the other half of the love triangle is a young Hugh Grant.

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason

The direct sequel to Bridget Jones’s Baby, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason is about what happens right after the happily ever after, particularly considering neither Bridget nor Mark have changed who they are—they’ve just gotten together. If you always want to know how couples in rom-coms actually adjust and take their relationship to the next level, this is the romance for you. And yes Hugh Grant’s Daniel Cleaver is back.

Bridget Jones’s Baby

Can you believe this is still about Bridget and Mark’s romance? Well, if you’re looking for a second-chance romance featuring two people you are already invested in, look no further. Because Bridget and her Mr. Darcy are still trying to figure out if they can work as a couple, and now there’s a baby involved! But is it Mark Darcy’s baby or is McDreamy himself (Patrick Dempsey) the father?

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy

After three movies about Bridget and Mark, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is about grief and moving forward—even when it seems impossible. Bridget and Mark’s happily ever after might be done, but there’s still life in Bridget, and while there’s life, there’s hope and perhaps maybe even more romance. It’s never too late, right?

  1. Bridget Jones's Diary

    #1

Bridget Jones is an average woman struggling against her age, her weight, her job, her lack of a man, and her various imperfections. As a New Year's resolution, Bridget decides to take control of her life, starting by keeping a diary in which she will always tell the complete truth. The fireworks begin when her charming though disreputable boss takes an interest in the quirky Miss Jones. Thrown into the mix are Bridget's band of slightly eccentric friends and a rather disagreeable acquaintance into whom Bridget cannot seem to stop running or help finding quietly attractive.

  2. Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason

    #2

Bridget Jones is working as a TV host and still dating her new love, barrister Mark Darcy, for a perfect six weeks. But Bridget is jealous of the time Mark spends with a gorgeous co-worker Rebecca and, despite a vacation meant to smooth things over, ends their relationship. On assignment in Thailand with her disreputable ex, Daniel Cleaver - claiming to be a reformed man - they have a short dalliance, and she is arrested at the airport and temporarily jailed on the false accusation of drug smuggling before Mark, seemingly indifferent, comes to the rescue.

  3. Bridget Jones's Baby

    #3

After breaking up with Mark Darcy five years earlier, Bridget Jones' happily-ever-after hasn't quite gone according to plan. Fortysomething and single again, she decides to focus on her job as top news producer and surround herself with old friends and new. For once, Bridget has everything completely under control. Then her love life takes a turn - while a weekend away at a music festival, she meets a dashing American named Jack, who is everything Mark is not, and spends a night with him. A week later, she runs into newly-separated Mark, and has a one-night dalliance. In an unlikely twist, she finds herself pregnant, but with one hitch - she's not sure of the identity of her baby's father - Mark or Jack.

  4. Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy

    #4

Bridget Jones navigates life as a widow and single mum with the help of her family, friends, and former lover, Daniel. Back to work and on the apps, she's pursued by a younger man and maybe - just maybe - her son's science teacher.
