Fourteen years after the premiere of Suits, and a couple of years after the series became a streaming success on Netflix, the show’s second spinoff is set to follow a new group of lawyers. The series, once again created by Suits creator and showrunner Aaron Korsh, is not, however, the only other show set in the Suits universe.
One show does not make a universe, but three—with shared characters popping in and out—do give that vibe. There have been other successful lawyer shows on TV, from Boston Legal to Ally McBeal, without forgetting Better Call Saul or even the recent Netflix hit The Lincoln Lawyer. But all of those are one-offs, making Suits perhaps the most successful purely lawyer-show on TV. That’s quite a legacy to uphold as the third show in the universe gets underway.
If you want to know what you need to watch to be completely caught up in the universe, here’s where to watch all the Suits TV shows and spinoffs, in the order they aired.
Suits
Half mystery, half corporate law, Suits focuses on Harvey (Gabriel Macht), a charismatic lawyer with a reputation for never playing nice who hires a new associate, Mike (Patrick J. Adams) despite knowing he hasn’t actually gone to law school—he just has a photographic memory. If you think this is going to be about Harvey and Mike trying not to get caught while having fun solving cases together, you’d be right. There’s also a fair bit of romance, a future Duchess and Gina Torres in a role so iconic she’d go on to get her own spinoff.
Pearson
The first Suits spinoff follows Gina Torres’ Jessica Pearson as she leaves behind the corporate world and gets down and dirty in the world of Chicago politics, becoming a fixer for the mayor. Occasional cameos from Suits characters aside, the show is much grittier than Suits and infinitely darker. If you loved Jessica Pearson on Suits, then you probably will love the focus on not just her way of handling things when she isn’t necessarily in charge, but her past.
Suits LA
Suits snappier, fancier and preppier cousin, Suits LA is set in Los Angeles and changes the focus from corporate law to entertainment law. That means plenty of cameos from well known actors, and reinvented characters that vaguely resemble the original show’s archetypes. There’s still a central mystery, plenty of flashbacks and characters that you sometimes don’t actually like, but that are still engaging enough to keep you watching. And there’s that tie-in with the original Suits, thanks to Harvey and Ted Black (Stephen Amell’s) friendship. That’s the new Suits universe for you.
