Sequels and remakes and reboots, oh my! 2025 is set to be a year full of highly anticipated follow ups to movies from years past, in addition to some exciting original films. These instalments span across all genres, including new additions to popular franchises like the DC and Marvel Cinematic Universes, Mission: Impossible, Knives Out, and Jurassic World. In addition, expect some great original films from directors like Bong Joon Ho and Ryan Coogler to provide some fresh perspectives as we make our way through 2025.

The Most Anticipated Sequels and Expanded Universes of 2025
Next year is set to bring back many popular franchises with sequels and new additions to expanded universes. In the superhero genre, we’ll see a new Captain America film in Brave New World featuring Anthony Mackie’s first big-screen debut as the Cap, and two new teams of superheroes introduced in Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
In the action genre, Tom Cruise returns for the second part of his final Mission: Impossible film, Dead Reckoning. We’ll also get a new look at the John Wick franchise with Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas. 2025 is also set to bring new additions to horror franchises with Saw XI and M3GAN 2.0. And after a long break, Danny Boyle and Cillian Murphy will return for a new instalment in their post-apocalyptic horror franchise with 28 Years Later.

Some brilliant children’s movies are also getting an update, including Paddington the bear’s adventures in Peru, a new live-action rendition of Snow White, and a live-action How to Train Your Dragon.
In the fantasy realm, the much anticipated third instalment of James Cameron’s Avatar franchise will be released, alongside a new Jurassic World adventure, and a foray back into the world of Oz with Wicked: Part Two. Netflix is scheduled to release a new instalment in their star-studded mystery film series Knives Out with Wake Up Dead Man, and a new Karate Kid film bringing back Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio is also in the books.
The Most Anticipated Original Movies in 2025
Acclaimed Parasite director Bong Joon Ho returns in 2025 with Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson as a dispensable clone who dies many deaths. Black Panther director Ryan Coogler teams up again with Michael B Jordan for horror film Sinners, in which two brothers return to their hometown where an evil is waiting for them. Autumn of 2025 will also bring a Michael Jackson biopic starring his nephew Jaafar Jackson as the King of Pop.

DC Studios and Warner Bros are set to release a new Superman movie written and directed by Marvel darling James Gunn. The film will restart the franchise, and stars David Corenswet as the titular hero. In addition, Guillermo del Toro will bring his version of Frankenstein starring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, and Christoph Waltz to the big screen in 2025, and Pixar will release a new heartwarming story with Elio.
