Iconic game franchise gets CGI-animated adaptation for the big screen
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is an animated adventure film directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic for Universal Pictures. The duo were responsible for writing 2018’s Teen Titans Go! To the Movies where Horvath served as director. The Super Mario Bros. Movie marks Jelenic’s directorial debut.
The plot of the movie is based on Nintendo's beloved Super Mario Bros. video game franchise featuring Mario the plumber and his group of companions. It is the third cinematic adaptation of the video games. The first adaptation was a Japanese animated film called Super Mario Bros: Peach-Hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen! and the second was a live-action adaptation released in 1993, which shared the same title, Super Mario Bros.
Chris Pratt leads as the voice of Mario while Charlie Day voices his loyal brother Luigi. Anya Taylor-Joy stars as Princess Peach with Jack Black handling the daunting task of voicing the villainous Bowser. Keegan-Michael Key and Seth Rogen round out the main cast voicing Toad and Donkey Kong respectively. Fred Armisen, Sebastian Maniscalco, Charles Martinet and Kevin Michael Richardson also lend their voices to the movie.
