Diana Nyad, a marathon swimmer who is 64 years old, faces the highly ambitious challenge of swimming from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage. This feat is not only a test of her endurance and willpower but also of her courage since the 110-mile-long route is through open water and the danger of sharks is always present. To support her, Diana has her two trusted companions – her swimming coach Bonnie Stoll and John Bartlett, the navigator of her path. This is obviously not an easy task as the 53-hour swim will push Diana to her absolute limit.
Nyad is a biographical sports-drama film co-directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin for Netflix. It is based on the remarkable true story of Diana Nyad from her autobiography entitled "Find a Way." Vasarhelyi and Chin are a husband-wife duo responsible for directing the 2018 documentary Free Solo which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Nyad marks their first foray into narrative dramas. Southland creator Ann Biderman and Julia Cox co-wrote the film's screenplay.
Annette Bening stars as the real-life marathon swimmer, Diana Nyad. Oscar winner Jodie Foster joins her as Bonnie Stoll while Rhys Ifans portrays John Bartlett. Bening is a celebrated and well-rounded Hollywood talent, earning four Oscar nominations from 1990-2010 as well as two Tony Award nominations and an Emmy nomination for Lead Actress. Foster has been a staple in the film industry since she was fourteen years old following her supporting role in the Martin Scorsese psychological thriller, Taxi Driver, which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She is a two-time Oscar winner for Best Actress, winning in 1989 and 1992 for her roles in The Accused and The Silence of the Lambs respectively.
