What to know

Christopher Nolan recruits a star-studded ensemble to bring the story of the atomic bomb's creation to life

Oppenheimer is a biographical drama film produced by Universal Pictures. The film is written and directed by the highly acclaimed regisseur Christopher Nolan, who previously helmed iconic films such as Memento, The Dark Knight, and Inception. Nolan also produced the film alongside his wife and frequent collaborator Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven. The film is based on the real life of theoretical physicist J Robert Oppenheimer, focusing on his years at the head of the Manhattan Project as they developed the first nuclear weapon. The existence of nuclear weapons has fundamentally changed society and modern warfare, both acting as a deterrent and a clear path to planetary destruction.

Oppenheimer himself is played by Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders). Emily Blunt stars as his wife, Katherine Oppenheimer, while Florence Pugh plays Jean Tatlock, an American psychiatrist. Matt Damon plays Leslie Groves, the Lieutenant General directing the Manhattan Project. Robert Downey Jr. appears as American businessman Lewis Strauss, and Josh Hartnett takes on the role of Nobel Prize-winning scientist Ernest Lawrence. Gustaf Skarsgård features as another scientist on the team, Hans Bethe. Gary Oldman appears as the American president at the time, Harry S Truman. Kenneth Branagh and Rami Malek also feature in the film.
