Barbie is a comedy drama produced by LuckyChap Entertainment and Mattel Films. The film is directed by Greta Gerwig and co-written with her partner and fellow filmmaker Noah Baumbach. Gerwig’s impressive filmography includes modern feminist gems Lady Bird, Little Women, and Frances Ha — the latter of which she co-wrote with Baumbach. Baumbach meanwhile has written and directed acclaimed relationship dramas such as The Squid and the Whale and Marriage Story.
Barbie is based on the iconic line of fashion dolls of the same name created by Ruth Handler for Mattel in the early 1960s. The cinematic Barbie herself is played by Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street), while Ken is brought to life by Ryan Gosling (La La Land). The cast is rounded out by Kate McKinnon as Weird Barbie, Will Ferrell as the Mattel CEO, Issa Rae as President Barbie, Michael Cera as Ken's friend Alan, and America Ferrera as a jaded mother and Mattel employee, amongst an impressive ensemble cast making up the film's many Barbies and Kens.
