Synopsis
A young woman with big dreams sets out on a mission to save her home
Moana is a young woman who dreams of exploring the seas — contrary to her family’s wishes. When a plague strikes her home, Moana sets out to find the demigod Maui, in an effort to save her home.

What is the live-action Moana about?
Moana is an upcoming children’s adventure film produced by Disney. The film is a live-action remake of the 2016 original animated film of the same name about a young Polynesian princess Moana, who must go on a journey on the high seas with the help of the demigod Maui in order to find the "Heart of Te Fiti" and save her island home. Jared Bush, who scripted the original film, returns to pen the screenplay alongside Dana Ledoux Miller.
Who is starring in the live-action Moana?
The live-action Moana sees Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson reprise his role as the demigod Maui, a part he first played as a voice actor in the 2016 animated film. Newcomer Catherine Laga‘aia joins as the young Moana in her big screen debut. Moana's father, Chief Tui, is played by actor John Tui, while Frankie Adams plays Moana’s playful mother, Sina. Meanwhile Rena Owen plays Moana's grandmother, Gramma Tala.
When will the live-action Moana be released?
Disney set the film's theatrical release to splash ashore on July 10, 2026.
