Synopsis
An assassin must come out of hiding in order to help the daughter she left years ago
After discovering that her estranged daughter is facing an imminent threat, a highly-skilled assassin emerges from hiding and teams up with her daughter to protect each other from harm. As they work together to stay alive, the mother reveals more details about why she had to abandon her child in the past. Jennifer Lopez stars in assassin revenge thriller from director of live-action Mulan adaptation
The Mother is an action-thriller drama film directed by Niki Caro for Netflix. Caro has previously directed 2002’s critically acclaimed Whale Rider, North Country in 2005, The Zookeeper’s Wife starring Jessica Chastain in 2017 and recently helmed the live-action adaptation of Mulan in 2020. Misha Green crafted the story for The Mother and co-wrote the screenplay with Andrea Berloff and Peter Craig.
Green worked as the showrunner and writer for HBO’s Lovecraft Country while Berloff and Craig also have impressive writing credits to their name – Berloff co-wrote the 2015 biopic Straight Outta Compton which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay while Craig also earned a nom for Best Adapted Screenplay with 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick. Star Jennifer Lopez produced The Mother along with Green, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Benny Medina, Roy Lee, Marc Evans and Miri Yoon.
Jennifer Lopez leads the cast as the titular Mother character. Lopez has had an illustrious career as both a musical talent and actress having appeared in numerous films spanning many genres from the early 1990s onward. She previously portrayed a mother on the run with her young daughter who learns to fight against her abusive husband in 2002’s Enough. Lucy Paez portrays her daughter in The Mother while Joseph Fiennes plays the film’s villain. Lopez starred in Maid in Manhattan with Fiennes’ brother, Ralph, the same year Enough was released. Omari Hardwick, Gael García Bernal, Paul Raci, Jesse Garcia and Yvonne Senat Jones round out the cast.
