Shirley is a biopic drama film written and directed by John Ridley for Netflix. It is based on the life of the renowned political figure Shirley Chisholm, offering an intimate and insightful narrative. It is made possible through an exclusive agreement with the Chisholm Estate, granting access to personal and significant aspects of her life. Ridley is an Academy Award winning screenwriter, having earned the distinction in 2013 for his work on 12 Years a Slave. He also created the ABC anthology crime drama TV series American Crime which ran for three seasons. Shirley is produced by Participant Media and Royal Ties Productions, the latter of which is the joint production company of star Regina King and her sister, Reina.
Academy Award winner Regina King portrays the lead role of Shirley Chisholm. King is a remarkably talented and distinguished actress, having won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2018 for If Beale Street Could Talk. She is joined by Lance Reddick in one of his final on-screen roles, Lucas Hedges, Christina Jackson, Michael Cherrie, Dorian Missick, Amirah Vann, W. Earl Brown, André Holland and Terrence Howard.
