Synopsis
When the Lord and eternal ruler of Dreams is summoned by mortal men, he is captured and imprisoned. Once finally free from captivity, Morpheus – also known as Dream – realizes that this marks only the beginning of his misfortune. The Ruler of Dreams must rebuild his kingdom, which has fallen apart during his absence.

What to know
The Sandman is a fantasy horror series produced by DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. for Netflix. The series is based on the groundbreaking comic book of the same name written by Neil Gaiman, who also developed this TV adaptation. Gaiman is a prolific and acclaimed writer whose works have often served as inspiration for both the big and small screen, including adaptations of American Gods, Stardust, and Coraline.
Tom Sturridge stars as Morpheus, the ruler of the Dreaming. The actor landed the role after a long audition process that lasted over a year. Gaiman and his team poured over thousands of auditions from around the world before choosing Sturridge. Gwendoline Christie also stars in the series as Lucifer Morningstar. In the original comics, Lucifer is a male character, but the former Game of Thrones actress portrays the charming keeper of the netherworld.
In addition to Tom Sturridge and Gwendoline Christie, an assortment of other characters feature in The Sandman. These include; Boyd Holbrook as Corinthian, Asim Chaudry as Abel, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death, and Mason Alexander Park as Desire. Patton Oswalt voices the character of Matthew the Raven, Morpheus’ crude emissary, and Mark Hamill is the voice of Mervyn Pumpkinhead, a cigar-smoking scarecrow with the head of a jack-o’-lantern. The Sandman was released on Netflix on August 5th, 2022.

- After long development delays and the scrapping of a Sandman movie, Netflix signs a deal with Warner Bros. to adapt a series. Warner Bros. pitched the series to many networks, including HBO, who chose not to move forward with the project due to its enormous budget.
