Venezia 81 - Festival highlights
There are twenty three feature films playing in competition at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, showcasing the latest films from world-renowned directors as they compete for the Golden Lion. Among the festival highlights is Pedro Almodovar’s The Room Next Door, which stars Tilda Swinton and marks the director’s first feature film in the English language. The pair previously worked together on the 30-minute short film, The Human Voice, which also premiered at Venice in 2020.
Another highlight at this year’s festival is Queer, the latest feature film from Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadadgino, who already garnered international success earlier this year with the release of Challengers. Starring James Bond alumni Daniel Craig, Queer was written by Justin Kuritzkes, who previously collaborated with Guadagnino on Challengers. Queer is based on the 1985 novel of the same name by William S. Burroughs.
You can also expect Venezia 81 to make headlines with premiere screening of Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to Todd Philips’ Joker, which grossed over $1 billion at the box office in 2019. Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, the film takes place two years after the events of Joker and sees Arthur Fleck fall in love with his therapist.
The Brutalist is another film playing in competition that should be on your radar. Directed by Brady Corbet and starring Adrien Brody, the film is an historical epic chronicling the life of László Tóth, a fictional mid-20th-century architect.
The festival will also feature the new film from Pablo Larrain, best known for directing Jackie and Spencer. He returns to Venice with Maria playing in competition; a biopic of the acclaimed opera singer Maria Callas starring Angelina Jolie. Nicole Kidman will also attend the festival as the star of Babygirl, an erotic thriller written and directed by Halina Reijn. It tells the story of a powerful CEO who embarks on a romance with a younger man.
