Venice Film Festival 2024: Every Movie in Competition to Add to Your Watchlist

Published on

The 81st Venice International Film Festival had its opening ceremony on August 28, 2024, with the premiere of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice screening out of competition. The festival’s winners will be announced on September 7, 2024, and this year’s line-up of films participating in competition include the latest work from Pedro Almodovar, Luca Guadagnino, Pablo Larraín and many more. If you’re following the festival and find yourself wondering where you can (eventually) watch the full line-up in theaters and on streaming services, we’ve got the perfect guide for you.

Although it will be some time before viewers can watch the Venice Film Festival line-up without attending the festival, this guide will show you where to watch them as soon as they are available on popular streaming services in the United States. This includes the latest streaming updates for services such as Netflix, Mubi, Criterion Channel and Amazon Prime Video.

Venezia 81 - Festival highlights

There are twenty three feature films playing in competition at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, showcasing the latest films from world-renowned directors as they compete for the Golden Lion. Among the festival highlights is Pedro Almodovar’s The Room Next Door, which stars Tilda Swinton and marks the director’s first feature film in the English language. The pair previously worked together on the 30-minute short film, The Human Voice, which also premiered at Venice in 2020.

Another highlight at this year’s festival is Queer, the latest feature film from Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadadgino, who already garnered international success earlier this year with the release of Challengers. Starring James Bond alumni Daniel Craig, Queer was written by Justin Kuritzkes, who previously collaborated with Guadagnino on Challengers. Queer is based on the 1985 novel of the same name by William S. Burroughs.

You can also expect Venezia 81 to make headlines with premiere screening of Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to Todd Philips’ Joker, which grossed over $1 billion at the box office in 2019. Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, the film takes place two years after the events of Joker and sees Arthur Fleck fall in love with his therapist.

The Brutalist is another film playing in competition that should be on your radar. Directed by Brady Corbet and starring Adrien Brody, the film is an historical epic chronicling the life of László Tóth, a fictional mid-20th-century architect.

The festival will also feature the new film from Pablo Larrain, best known for directing Jackie and Spencer. He returns to Venice with Maria playing in competition; a biopic of the acclaimed opera singer Maria Callas starring Angelina Jolie. Nicole Kidman will also attend the festival as the star of Babygirl, an erotic thriller written and directed by Halina Reijn. It tells the story of a powerful CEO who embarks on a romance with a younger man.

Who is on the Jury for Venice Film Festival 2024?

Isabelle Huppert serves as Jury President at Venezia 81’s Main Competition. She is joined by James Gray (American filmmaker), Andrew Haigh (British filmmaker), Agnieszka Holland (Polish filmmaker), Kleber Mendonça Filho (Brazilian filmmaker, producer and critic), Abderrahmane Sissako (Mauritanian filmmaker), Giuseppe Tornatore (Italian filmmaker) Julia von Heinz (German filmmaker) and Zhang Ziyi (Chinese actress).

If Stefano, in fact, does his utmost to heal soldiers and send them back to fight, Dr. Giulio Farradio makes them ill, or helps them to self-injure seriously enough to be exonerated. The two doctors, who went to university together and were great friends, they not only (secretly) challenge each other on a professional level, but also on the sentimental one: they are both linked to Anna, a courageous nurse with a strong character.
