Arthur Fleck has spawned a movement. Whether he intended it or not, Fleck has been turned and tipped over the edge into full-blown psychopathy. Fleck, now known as Joker is at Arkham Asylum, where he meets a fellow inmate who is curious and cunning. Joined in their madness, Joker and his newfound partner, Harley Quinn find music and magic in their madness.
Joker: Folie à Deux is a dark comedy musical drama film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. The movie is a sequel to Joker (2019), which was a roaring success both commercially and critically. The movie was nominated for eleven Academy Awards, winning both Best Original Score and Best Actor. Joker: Folie à Deux retains director Todd Phillips and also features Scott Silver as co-screenwriter. Retaining his role as the cinematographer and long-time collaborator with Todd Philips is Lawrence Sher.
Joker: Folie à Deux includes an all-star cast led by highly acclaimed actor Joaquin Phoenix. Phoenix won an Oscar for his portrayal of Arthur Fleck in the original Joker movie and received almost universal critical appreciation for his performance. Joining him as Harley Quinn is superstar singer and actress Lady Gaga. Zazie Beetz rejoins the cast as Fleck’s caring neighbor Sophie Dumond. New cast members include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Harry Lawtey, and Jacob Lofland.
The sequel movie was confirmed to be a musical by filmmaker Todd Phillips. The casting of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn bolstered the films musical stardom. The movie contains fifteen covers of popular songs, making it a jukebox musical. With dancing and performance at the heart of the original Joker movie, director Todd Phillips felt that making the sequel into a musical was not such a great leap.
The movie is set in the world of Gotham and features references to the Wayne family. Bruce Wayne is therefore definitely a character in the world of the movie as us Batman. But Joker: Folie à Deux is a love story about the Joker and Harley Quinn and therefore Batman is unlikely to play a large role.
The movie has been given an R-rating for strong violence, language, sexuality and brief nudity.
Margot Robbie portrayed Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, The Suicide Squad, and Birds of Prey. She was not considered for the role of Harley Quinn for Joker: Folie à Deux because the movie is set in a different universe and Robbie has confirmed that she will not play the character again.
