The 2024 Golden Globe nominations have arrived and it seems clear that “Barbenheimer” didn’t just dominate the summer box office, but Barbie and Oppenheimer are also going to rule the Globes. Both films have been nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay, and their leads have all received acting nominations. Cillian Murphy has earned a nomination for Best Performance by an Actor and Margot Robbie is nominated for Best Performance by an Actress. Ryan Gosling also received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor thanks to his role as Ken.
Joining Barbie and Oppenheimer as a top contender is Killers of the Flower Moon. It’s also received a nomination in every top category like Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay, and the film’s stars - Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert DeNiro, and Lily Gladstone - all received nominations for their performances. Other movies that received multiple nominations include the biopics Nyad and Maestro, and the dark comedy Poor Things – Emma Stone actually has two Best Actress nominations at the Globes this year, being nominated for both her film Poor Things and her Showtime series The Curse.
There were also a few surprise nominations this year, with Disney’s Wish earning a Best Animated Motion Picture nomination despite its lukewarm box office earnings, and Timothee Chalamet landing a Best Actor nom for Wonka.
In total, there were 28 movies nominated in the major categories this year, spanning everything from blockbuster hits to indie films, and quite a few movies that are streaming on Netflix. As always, there’s been a heavy emphasis on biopics this year (they always seem to be a favorite amongst award shows). On top of those already mentioned, other biopics that earned nominations include Air, about Michael Jordan, and Priscilla, about Priscilla Presley and her relationship with Elvis.
The Golden Globe Awards airs on January 7, 2024, and here’s where to watch every nominated film before then.
