In 1973, a volunteer who was studying wildlife on an island located off the coast of Cornwall had a peculiar experience. While making daily observations of a rare flower, her experience turned ominous and mysterious, leading her to question the distinction between reality and a frightening dream.
Enys Men is an experimental folk horror film. It is produced by Film4 and is distributed by NEON in North America. Mark Jenkin, an independent filmmaker renowned for producing works that examine the heritage and landscape of Cornwall, is the writer and director of the movie. Bait, Jenkin's previous movie, was honored with a number of independent awards as well as a BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Director. Enys Men, like Bait, was filmed on 16 mm film. Due to COVID-19 lockdowns, production for the film occurred over the course of 21 days. The film's title is a translation from Cornish, the local language, and refers to Stone Island.
Playing the character of The Volunteer is Mary Woodvine, an actress known for her performances in various stage productions and as a cast member in the British soap opera EastEnders. Her father, John Woodvine, who previously starred in The Crown, also features in the film as The Preacher. The remaining cast comprises Edward Rowe, who portrays The Boatman, Flo Crowe as The Girl, Joe Gray as The Miner, and Loveday Twomlow as The Baby.
