With the galaxy in a time of prosperity, the Sith are outnumbered and living at the margins. In this gilded-age, the Jedi rule over a peaceful galaxy and still it seems that something lurks in the corners. The Acolyte follows the story of an ardent devotee at a time when the dark side is an underground countercultural force. Leading up to the events that see the reemergence of the Sith, The Acolyte shows the beginning of that journey from obscurity to the central force that rules the galaxy. Reuniting a padwan with their Jedi master, the pair are put forward for an investigation into a series of crimes.
Essential viewing for fans of Ahsoka
Viewers who loved Ahsoka's female-led story and deep dive into Star Wars lore will be delighted by The Acolyte. The new series continues probing witches and the mythical side of the Force but sets itself apart from other series by focusing on the lesser-known High Republic era. With powerful performances from Amandla Stenberg, Dafne Keen, and Lee Jung-jae and an interesting twin twist, The Acolyte is a refreshing story. It ultimately still has the exciting and adventurous feel of a typical Star Wars show but offers viewers a new side of the galaxy and Jedi Order.

Disney’s latest Star Wars series The Acolyte takes place roughly 100 years before Episode I – The Phantom Menace and begins with the unexplained murder of a Jedi. What follows is a fantastically fresh and unique adventure, giving Star Wars fans something that feels new and different, while still being very much rooted in a galaxy far, far away. The Acolyte also seems to have taken some pointers from Marvel, with the show having a similar spirit to Guardians of the Galaxy. Since the series takes place so early in the Star Wars timeline, it’s also a great place for new fans to be introduced to the franchise.

The Acolyte is a sci-fi mystery series produced by Lucasfilm for Disney+. The Acolyte is created by Leslye Headland, best known as creator of Netflix series Russian Doll. She initially pitched the idea to Kathleen Kennedy as a female-centric story set a hundred years before Star Wars Episode 1: A Phantom Menace.
Amandla Stenberg stars as Mae, a dangerous and mysterious warrior who was once a Jedi apparenctice. Lee Jung-jae plays Sol, a high-ranking Jedi Master with his padwan Jecki Lon played by Dafne Keen. Jodie Turner-Smith plays Mother Aniseya, the head of a group of force witches. Carrie-Anne Moss stars as the Jedi Master Indara. The cast also includes Rebecca Henderson, Manny Jacinto, Charlie Barnett, and Dean-Charles Chapman.
The Acolyte is an original story created by Leslye Headland who was inspired by the Star Wars High Republic books. She was also inspired by martial arts movies such as Come Drink with Me and A Touch of Zen. Another inspiration for the movie was the 1950 epic Rashomon.
Jedi Master Yoda is not confirmed to make an appearance in the show. He is however an important figure in the High Republic Era when the show is set. In this age, Jedi are scattered all over the galaxy so while Yoda may be alive in the course of the show, he is likely to be far from the action.
The Acolyte is the first live-action Star Wars project set in the High Republic era, a time when Jedi were prevalent across the galaxy. The Sith are yet to emerge and the Jedi are in a Golden Age of power and authority. This is symbolized by their white robes which are directly inspired from the High Republic books.
Creator Leslye Headland confirmed that in her initial pitch, she envisioned the show to be a multi-season series. Headland confirms that The Acolyte does not tie up every loose thread in Season 1. The possibility of a second season of The Acolyte however depends entirely on the success of the first season on Disney+.
