Two separate monarchs have been crowned in the wake of the passing of King Viserys the Peaceful. At King's Landing, Aegon II Targaryen has been crowned and assumed King by the Green's. Meanwhile, on the island of Dragonstone, the origin place of House Targaryen, Rhaenyra Targaryen has been crowned Queen by the Blacks. These opposing factions come to a head in the Dance of the Dragons as civil war looms.
House of the Dragon Season 2 is the second season of the fantasy series by HBO based on the book Fire & Blood by author George R.R. Martin. The story takes place within the “A Song of Ice and Fire” universe that brought the HBO series, Game of Thrones, to the small screen. George R.R. Martin co-developed the series with Ryan Condal. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik serve as executive producers. Writers for the second season include Ryan Condal, David Hancock, Sara Hess, and Ti Mikkel.
The cast for the second season includes Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen. Olivia Cooke returns as Alicent Hightower. Emma D'Arcy portrays Rhaenyra Targaryen. Rhys Ifan is Otto Hightower while Steve Toussaint plays Corlys Velaryon. Eve Best plays Rhaenys Targaryen and Sonoya Mizuno plays Mysaria. The wider cast includes Fabien Frankel, Graham McTavish, Matthew Needham, Jefferson Hall, Tom Glynn-Carney, and Ewan Mithcell among others.
House of the Dragon Season 2 features eight episodes in total, two less than the first season of the show. The reduction in episodes is to allow for the first and final episode to be longer.
Showrunner Ryan Condal confirmed that the second season introduces new dragons into the storyline. Five new dragons that did not appear in the first season are introduced for the second.
The second season of the show features five directors. Claire Kilner, Geeta Vasant Patel, Alan Taylor, Andrij Parekh, and Loni Peristere. Claire Kilner is best known for working on series such as Gen V, Fallout, Snowpiercer and House of the Dragon Season 1. Alan Taylor has directed episodes of Game of Thrones, The Crowded Room, and The Many Saints of Newark. Geeta Vasant Patel has worked on shows such as Under the Bridge, Ahsoka and House of the Dragon Season 1. Andrij Parekh is known for his work on Watchmen and Succession while Loni Peristere has directed American Horror Story and The Witcher.
