Synopsis
Mariam and her classmates at Jordan’s most elite school for girls find themselves fighting off controversy – and each other – in the second season of the Arab language hit. It’s safe to say young women weren’t exactly the best of friends in the first season. But their disagreements were about more than bullying and distrust. The girls live in a world where hiding so much of who they are is ordinary. Whether it’s relationships with the opposite sex or maintaining pristin images, the young women often suffer and sacrifice their own happiness. AlRawabi School for Girls Season 2 is the second season of a Jordanian drama series produced by Netflix. The show was created, directed and co-written by Tina Shomali, a Jordanian filmmaker and actress. Shomali is known in particular for her comedic credits and was once given the title of the “Tina Fey of the Arab World.” AlRawabi School for Girls was hailed for breaking barriers as an Arab show that dealt with topics often avoided in Middle Eastern and North African media.
Not only does the show center on the relationships and lives of teenage girls from their point of view, it also takes a critical look at the deeply patriarchal structures of their culture. The series was an unexpected hit on Netflix in Arab countries, which was proof that audiences have been longing for a change in programming. AlRawabi School for Girls also refuses to shy away from examining the impact on young women’s mental health, which has long been a taboo topic in the region.
AlRawabi School for Girls stars Andria Tayeh as Mariam, a bullied teen who ruthlessly seeks out revenge against her schoolmates. Playing Mariam’s friends and foes are Rakeen Sa’ad who stars as Noaf, Noor Taher in the role of Layan, Yara Mustafa as Dina, and Joanna Arida as Rania. AlRawabi School for Girls Season 2 was released on February 15, 2024 on Netflix.
