The sixth and final season of Netflix’s controversial drama picks up in 1997, just before the tragic car crash that led to Princess Diana’s death. After winning the 1997 general elections by a landslide, Tony Blair’s Labour Party is in power, and the season will also cover the meeting of Prince William and Kate at St. Andrews University and the wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles.
The sixth and final season of The Crown stars Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana. They are all reprising their roles from the previous season and are joined by Lesley Manville, Dominic West, Olivia Williams, Khalid Abdalla, Salim Daw, and Bertie Carvel.
The Netflix original series has often been criticised for its dramatisation and embellishment of real events. At one point, the show’s creator, Peter Morgan had planned to conclude the series after five seasons, but then chose to produce a final sixth season in order to dive deeper into the storylines. Morgan is known for his exploration of historical figures and events in his work, which includes The Queen, The Last King of Scotland and The Other Boleyn Girl.
