Maguire based the characters and settings of his novel on L. Frank Baum’s iconic 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. In turn, the 1995 novel, its theater adaptation and the film are all inspired by the classic film of the same name by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
