Investigative reporter Rae de Leon interviews several young women around the US who reported sexual assaults, only to be charged themselves with false reporting. Some of the women faced severe legal repercussions, including prison time, and de Leon re-examines the initial police interviews and handling of the cases that led to victims becoming suspects.
Victim/Suspect is an investigative documentary film produced by the Center for Investigative Reporting Studios and Motto Pictures for a Netflix release. The film is directed by Nancy Schwarzman, an award-winning documentary filmmaker known for Roll Red Roll. Victim/Suspect premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023.
The film follows reporter Rae de Leon’s investigation into the high number of cases in the US involving young women reporting sexual assaults, only to be charged with giving false accusations. De Leon interviews the young women, their families, law experts, and other involved parties to share their stories and reexamine the cases. Victim/Suspect aims to shed light on a police system that, at both a local and national level, appears to encourage law enforcement to turn victims into suspects.
