Anyone But You (2023)

It's hard to describe just how much a film like Anyone But You was needed back in 2023. The traditional romcom was on its knees (no, not like that), but then Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney swooned in with their raunchy star-crossed lovers and enough charm to fill out cinemas worldwide. It's not the most sophisticated romance you'll ever see on screen, but it is tremendously entertaining, thanks in no small part to the chemistry that fizzles between Powell and Sweeney throughout. A more perfect plane movie doesn't exist. Trust us. We've looked.

A shameless crowd-pleaser from Will Gluck, director of Easy A. There’s plenty of the sly wit of that movie here, albeit in a smoother, more mainstream package that majors on the meme-worthy chemistry between two of the faces of Gen Z cinema, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. A meet-cute, a fall-out, a scheme, a reconciliation: as the comfortingly familiar beats of romantic comedy (and indeed of Shakespeare’s Much Ado about Nothing, upon which this is loosely based) play out against the plush backdrops of Boston and Sydney, it feels like an easy win to see them given a modern spin.
