Synopsis
A team of master craftsmen from the famous Scarefactory in Columbus, Ohio, takes on a spellbinding challenge from History: to re-create some of the most fascinating weapons and devices ever made. In an effort to understand ancient advances in inventions and weaponry, the team rebuilds the elements just as they would have been made centuries ago — and then goes on to test them! <i>Surviving History</i> is an enlightening journey into such tools as the Iron Maiden, Judas Cradle, Strappado, Whirligig, Rack, Shame Flute, Chastity Belt, and Heretic's Fork, and illuminates such advances as China's early use of gunpowder and rocket-propelled fire arrows, the battering rams and missile launchers of the Romans, and the semi-automatic Chinese repeating crossbow. From a muzzling apparatus used during 17th-century marriage counseling to a human knotting experiment implemented during the Vietnam War, you won’t believe the evil ingenuity that went into these inventions of persuasion and punishment.
