The Milla Jovovich-led Resident Evil series has had six theatrically released films in a span of fifteen years. A reboot without Jovovich, Welcome to Raccoon City, released in 2021 and serves as a complete reboot of the Resident Evil series. Based on the Capcom Japanese video game franchise, Paul W. S. Anderson wrote and directed the original 2002 adaptation of the video game with Jovovich starring in the lead role of Alice Abernathy. Set in the small, industrialized city of Raccoon City, the franchise follows Alice, a former security expert and undercover agent, who fights against the Umbrella Corporation. The company's bio-weapons have caused a zombie apocalypse, leading to a relentless battle for survival. Although there were a number of characters from the video game who appeared in the films including Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine, Ada Wong, Carlos Olivera, Chris Redfield, Leon S. Kennedy, Barry Burton and the villainous Albert Wesker and James Marcus, Jovovich’s character of Alice was specifically created for the film.
Anderson wrote the screenplay for six Resident Evil films and directed four – the original 2002 film, 2010's Afterlife, Retribution in 2012 and 2016's The Final Chapter. Alexander Witt directed the 2004 sequel, Apocalypse, while Russell Mulcahy helmed 2007's Extinction. The 2021 reboot features Johannes Roberts handling both screenwriting and directing duties. Despite the less than stellar critic reviews, the Resident Evil franchise including the reboot has managed to earn over $1.2 billion at the worldwide box office. Here are all the Resident Evil movies in order according to theatrical release and where to find them.
