For decades, the superhero/comic book genre has been primarily led by male characters in movies and TV shows. However, in recent years, compelling female heroes have risen to challenge the traditional dominance of male-centric superheroes.
Works with female-led heroes have taken time to gain traction but have undeniably connected with audiences. Whether in theaters, on television or as animated characters, heroines such as Korra from The Legend of Korra, Black Widow and Ms. Marvel not only match their male counterparts but also hold significant importance for legions of fans.
To explore female-led heroes further, we aimed to discover the popularity of specific titles and examine the most beloved heroines in film and TV. We established a particular set of rules to measure this information accurately.
How did we determine popularity?
In our quest for the best super-powered heroine movies and shows, we checked out their JustWatch popularity score over the past five years. This score considers things like clicks on streaming options, adding to watchlists, and marking a movie as 'seen.' We gathered data from around the world, covering 140 countries and 40 million users per month.
Exclusions:
- We didn't include team-up movies like The Avengers, unless the character's name is in the title (like Ant-Man and the Wasp) or there's a clear protagonist (such as Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey).
- The main character must be a superheroine with superpowers (like Frozen's Elsa) or be in a superhero-themed movie or TV show (like Marvel's Hope van Dyne a.k.a. Wasp).
Where can I watch the top 50 superheroines in movies and TV?
In addition to finding which heroes are the most popular, JustWatch provides information about the streaming platforms where you can watch the movie or TV show. This includes major services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+, just to name a few. We hope you have a great time exploring these Marvel-ous options!
