Two of the highest-grossing franchises ever, Jurassic Park and Mission: Impossible, also launched trailers during the game. If Jurassic World wasn’t good, it wouldn’t have been able to relaunch the franchise. Luckily, the film was lots of fun and truly brought Jurassic Park into the modern era. Starting just before the events of Jurassic World and taking place concurrently as the park is overrun with dinosaurs, the Netflix animated series Camp Cretaceous is a surprisingly good time. The series centers around an invite-only camp on Isla Nublar for dino-obsessed kids that’s run by Jurassic World. But when the park falls apart, so does the camp. Camp Cretaceous had a great cast including Jenna Ortega and some awesome guest stars like Bill Nye, Glen Powell, and Jameela Jamil.

Jurassic World Dominion

It’s hard to tell when Jurassic World jumped the shark. It was either the volcano eruption in Fallen Kingdom or the dinosaur-overrun planet in Dominion. But in all fairness…it doesn’t really matter because it’s so totally wild to watch. In Jurassic World Dominion, dinosaurs have now made their way across the globe. Also, there’s giant grasshoppers that are about to destroy the human race, *and* Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Sam Neill all reprise their roles. The movie is nuttier than a jar of Jiff, but it’s so bonkers you can’t look away. It’s the action movie equivalent of a guilty pleasure.

Since the beginning, the Fantastic Four has had a wild and bumpy ride making the transition to film and television. In fact, the heroes were initially supposed to make their cinematic debut in 1994. After Suzie’s (Rashida Jones) husband and son go missing in a presumed plane crash, she is given a robot called Sunny from her husband's robotics company to help her navigate the days ahead. As she struggles with the loss, she teams up with Sunny to uncover the truth behind the mysterious disappearance. Similarly to Severance, the enigmatic company behind the robot shares similarities with Lumon Industries which fans will certainly enjoy.

For All Mankind

For All Mankind explores an alternate history where the USSR landed on the Moon first in the 1960s and imagines a world where the space race continued rather than escalating into the Cold War. Like Severance, For All Mankind features an ensemble cast with strong chemistry, making it a must-watch for fans of different realities and scientific progress.

Calls

From Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez comes Calls, a unique animated series that tells its story through a series of connected phone calls. These calls follow a group of strangers whose lives are turned upside down when they face the approach of a mysterious apocalyptic event. With names like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Aubrey Plaza, Pedro Pascal, Nicholas Braun and Rosario Dawson lending their voices to the series, Severance fans can appreciate the peculiar and strange elements found in Calls.

Foundation

Swan Song

A devoted husband is diagnosed with a terminal illness and considers replacing himself with a clone to spare his family grief. Oscar winner Mahershala Ali leads the film as Cameron Turner, a man fighting with a deep internal conflict, which resembles the inner struggles Mark faces in Severance.

Fingernails

Fingernails features Jessie Buckley as a woman who takes a job at an institute dedicated to testing the authenticity of love between couples. Riz Ahmed, Jeremy Allen White and Luke Wilson round out the cast. A key moral theme of Severance revolves around the nature of emotions experienced by the workers at Lumon, causing viewers to reflect on the authenticity of these feelings and whether they can truly be deemed "real".

Sharper

In 1979, Phantasm, an independent film, premiered as a decidedly strange and ambiguous horror movie with lesser-known actors. It would become a testament to the power of indie films as, four decades later, audiences still hail it as one of the best horror movies ever made. While most dismiss his claims as delusions, he finds allies in his brother’s friend, Reggie (Reggie Bannister), and Liz (Paula Irvine), a woman with whom he has a psychic connection. The sequel moved more towards conventional horror as it ramped up the gore and campiness, although it maintained its surreal, dream-like premise, earning mixed reviews from critics. 

Phantasm’s subsequent two sequels, Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead and Phantasm IV: Oblivion, were direct-to-video releases that brought back Baldwin as Mike. These movies delve more into sci-fi as Mike and Reggie probe the Tall Man’s dabbling in dimensions and even travel back in time to witness his origin story as Jebediah Morningside. 

After Phantasm IV: Oblivion, Coscarelli took an 18-year break from the Phantasm franchise. The final film, Phantasm: Ravager, premiered in 2016. While Coscarelli produced and co-wrote the movie, David Hartman took over as director. In the film, Reggie is now in a nursing home, though he continues to access different dimensions through his dreams of pursuing the Tall Man with Mike. While the film received some criticism for its convoluted plot and poor CGI, it served as a worthy conclusion as it continued probing its theme of death/grief while still leaving viewers questioning whether the story is reality or a dream. It also marked the final appearance of Scrimm as the legendary horror icon Tall Man before his passing in 2016.

In 1998, the Hideo Nakata-directed Ring premiered. The Ring franchise began in 1991 with Koji Suzuki’s Ring novel. It was first adapted to the screen in the TV film Ring (1995). The earliest adaptation is one of the most faithful to the source material, but its lower budget/quality led to the film receiving little fanfare. It was ultimately Ring (1998) that kickstarted the franchise. The horror film follows journalist Reiko Asakawa (Nanako Matsushima) as she investigates the death of her niece, Tomoko (Yuko Takeuchi), who allegedly died after watching a cursed videotape. She enlists the help of her ex-husband, Ryūji Takayama (Hiroyuki Sanada), to find the tape and get to the bottom of its curse.

At the time of Ring’s release, slasher horror films were the norm. Hence, Ring stood out for its unique premise of a cursed video tape, lack of jump scares, and the decision to have most deaths occur offscreen. The idea of an unseen killer and the use of tension and mystery for horror had a lasting impact on Western cinema while sparking a J-horror renaissance.

Ring was filmed simultaneously with its sequel, Spiral, also released in 1998. After receiving criticism for a convoluted plot that contradicted the first movie, Spiral was initially forgotten. As a result, Nakata was brought back to direct an alternative sequel to Ring, Ring 2, which follows Mai (Miki Nakatani), a young woman determined to find and save Reiko and her son from the vengeful spirit Sadako (Rie Inō). Due to its financial success, Ring 2 was followed by a prequel, Ring 0: Birthday, which further explores the lore of Sadako (Yukie Nakama). Two decades later, Ring 2 finally received a sequel with Nakata’s Sadako. The film follows a young girl (Himeka Himejima) who is believed to be the reincarnation of Sadako.

Between Ring 0: Birthday and Sadako, the Spiral timeline was revived with the sequels Sadako 3D, Sadako 3D 2, and Sadako DX, as well as the crossover movie Sadako vs. Kayako. In addition, the American remake series began in 2002 with The Ring. 

In the remake, Naomi Watts and Martin Henderson play reporter Rachel Keller and her ex-husband Noah Clay, respectively, as they investigate a cursed videotape connected to the spirit of Samara Morgan (Daveigh Chase). The film paid tribute to the original’s use of psychological horror and suspense, earning the direct sequel The Ring Two and the second sequel, Rings, which takes place 15 years after The Ring.

Dario Argento’s Suspiria premiered in 1977. Thomas De Quincey’s Suspiria de Profundis essay collection loosely inspired this supernatural horror movie. Suspiria is the first movie in Argento’s trilogy, The Three Mothers. The film follows Suzy (Jessica Harper), an American ballet student who moves to Germany to attend a prestigious dance school. The last installment occurs in Rome, where museum worker Sarah (Asia Argento) accidentally unleashes the witch Mater Lachrymarum (Moran Atias). It was a bloody, exhilarating, and excessive conclusion to the trilogy. However, Suspiria’s legacy wouldn’t end there.

A remake of Suspiria was announced a year after Mother of Tears premiered. By 2015, Luca Guadagnino announced he would direct the movie. However, he would later classify Suspiria (2018) as a tribute to the original rather than a proper remake. The film follows Susie Bannon (Dakota Johnson), a ballet student who begins training at Helen Markos’ (Tilda Swinton) ballet academy. Shortly after her arrival, the school faces accusations of witchcraft.

Similar to the original Suspiria movie, Guadagnino’s tribute received mixed reactions. Some critics hailed it as a masterpiece for its complex themes and daring attempt to match the original's innovative cinematography, but others criticized the narrative. The Amazing Spider-Man (1977-1979)

Next up, Spider-Man got his very own live-action series starring Nicholas Hammond (who gained fame from starring in The Sound of Music) with The Amazing Spider-Man. The show was popular, but it was also pretty expensive to produce and CBS worried that continuing the show past two seasons would be too much of a financial gamble, and ultimately decided to cancel it.

Spider-Man (1981)

For one season, Spider-Man returned with a self-titled animated series that saw Spidey face off against tons of in-universe villains like Dr. Octopus, but also villains from other franchises like Magneto from X-Men and Medusa from Fantastic Four. 

Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends (1981-1983)

The same year Spider-Man got a new animated series, he also got a spin-off show. In Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, Parker teams up with Iceman from X-Men and a new original character named Firestar. The trio team up as the “Spider-Friends” to fight villains. 

Spider-Man (1994-1997)

Spider-Man was again rebooted as an animated series in 1994. Running for five seasons, the show saw Parker do his thing as Spider-Man to help save the city from villains. The finale also involved multiple Spider-Men from different universes, being a precursor to the Spiderverse plotline that’s been revisited numerous times since.

Spider-Man Unlimited (1999-2000)

Spider-Man Unlimited had a darker, more mature tone and sees Spidey get framed as a villain after the Daily Bugle blames him for a missing astronaut. The series also brought on Venom and Carnage as major villains for the first time in a Spider-Man TV series.

Spider-Man: The New Animated Series (2006-2009)

Released during the era of the Sam Raimi films, The New Animated Series takes place during the same timeline as the films (making Spider-Man a college student) and fills in the gap between the first two movies. It also had a robust voice cast including Neil Patrick Harris and Lisa Loeb. 

The Spectacular Spider-Man (2012-2016)

In 2012, Spider-Man was rebooted yet again with The Spectacular Spider-Man, this time placing him back in high school. The series was also released the same year that Andrew Garfield revived the character in the movie The Amazing Spider-Man. 

Spider-Man (2017-2020)

In 2017, Spider-Man got a reboot yet again, and again it was released the same year as another film reboot: Spider-Man: Homecoming (which premiered just three years after the second Andrew Garfield movie).

Designed for a much younger audience, Spidey and His Amazing Friends now places Parker and his friends as grade school students. But Spidey and his allies like Spin and Ghost-Spider still tackle bad guys…just with a little less action and violence.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is set in an alternate timeline that explores Peter Parker’s origin story. It also changes up the modern MCU plotline by making Norman Osborn Peter’s mentor instead of Tony Stark. The show has a pretty famous voice cast as well, starring Colman Domingo, Hugh Dancy, and Charlie Cox.

For the 2025 Oscars, Netflix’s Emilia Perez is leading the charge with a whopping 13 nominations, including Best Picture. Not far behind are The Brutalist and Wicked, which each have 10 nominations. But those films will see some hefty competition from other movies that have scored multiple nominations each – like The Substance, Anora, Nickel Boys, and A Real Pain.

The nominations revealed a few surprises as well. Many assumed Angelina Jolie would earn an Oscar nomination for her biopic Maria, but the film was only nominated for one award, Best Cinematography. Another surprise was that Colman Domingo earned himself his second Oscar nomination for his role in Sing Sing. Nosferatu also surprised fans by earning a few nominations in categories like cinematography, costume design, and Makeup & Hairstyling.

British film studio Hammer Film Productions produced another early Dracula series. Dracula (1958) starred Christopher Lee as Dracula and Peter Cushing as vampire hunter Doctor Van Helsing. The film made further strides toward the modern interpretation of Dracula, as Lee played the character as more menacing than charming, with red bloodshot eyes and fangs. Hammer would produce eight more Dracula movies, including The Brides of Dracula.

Dracula enjoyed a resurgence in 1992 with Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The film moved away from the campy monster movies of the past, humanizing Dracula (Gary Oldman) as a lonely, immortal soul who falls for Jonathan Harker’s (Keanu Reeves) fiancée, Mina (Winona Ryder). It imbued the movie with a sense of eroticism, paying tribute to the perceived sexual metaphors of Stoker’s novel and paving the way for the 21st-century interpretations of Dracula.

The 21st century ushered in the most creative era of Dracula interpretations. The character has morphed from an overprotective father in Hotel Transylvania to a superhero villain in Blade: Trinity and then into a nightmare boss in Renfield. Additionally, some projects seek to expand the lore of Dracula beyond Stoker’s novel. John Wick

Fans might be surprised to learn that the biggest inspiration for Sakamoto Days wasn’t other anime or manga, but actually the John Wick film series. The franchise started in 1968 with the cult classic Night of the Living Dead, directed by Romero and co-written by Romero and John Russo. In Day of the Dead, scientists Dr. Sarah Bowman (Lori Cardille) and Dr. Matthew Logan (Richard Liberty) research the cause of the zombie outbreak and whether zombies can be domesticated. In Land of the Dead, tyrannical leader Paul Kaufman (Dennis Hopper) creates a feudal society soon threatened by evolving zombies. Both films were as gory and sharp as ever as Romero delved into philosophy and politics, probing class struggles, tyranny, and what it means to be human.

The final two films, Diary of the Dead and Survival of the Dead, take viewers back to the beginning of the outbreak. Diary of the Dead utilizes the found footage format and follows a group of film students shooting a documentary during the zombie outbreak. Meanwhile, Survival of the Dead follows National Guard Sergeant "Nicotine" Crockett (Alan van Sprang), who discovers an island where two powerful families feud over what should be done with their infected loved ones. Diary of the Dead received positive reviews from critics, but reception waned with Survival of the Dead, which was criticized for failing to explore new territory.

Dissatisfied with the ending of Survival of the Dead, Romero began developing Twilight of the Dead, which will reportedly explore the world's final fate once humanity reaches near extinction.

Jaws 3-D

Jaws 3-D is when the franchise really got interesting (and absolutely insane). The third film takes place in SeaWorld of all places, and guess who works there: Brody’s son. Also, an angry 35-foot momma shark has swum into the park, which is equipped with tons of underwater tunnels for guests to view marine life. Even though Jaws 3-D is admittedly very clunky, the wild setting created some very fun and memorable scenes.

Jaws: The Revenge 

If you thought Jaws 3D was crazy, you’ll crap your pants when you watch Jaws: The Revenge. In the movie, Brody is now dead and his wife visits their grandson in the Bahamas. But…guess who else shows up to the island nation – another giant shark. The movie is pure insanity and the finale is a laughable joke that features a claymation shark THAT ROARS. Don’t go into Jaws: The Revenge expecting a classic, but if you’ve got a bottle of wine and a group of friends, it’s definitely going to be a good time.

The Rage: Carrie 2 (1999)

The sequel The Rage: Carrie 2 centers around Rachel Lang…who is revealed to be the half-sister of Carrie from the first movie. In the film, Rachel deals with much of what Carrie did, except it’s all taken to more of an extreme, with scuzzier jocks, meaner cheerleaders, and even more unhelpful adults. The Rage was a box office bomb, but it’s still worth watching at least once if you’re a Carrie fan.

Carrie (2002)

In 2002, Carrie received a special made-for-TV movie written by Bryan Fuller (known for creating shows like Hannibal). The plot largely followed that of the original, but the movie did star some big names like Patricia Clarkson and Angela Bettis.

In 2013, Carrie was rebooted once again, this time with a massive budget and a wide cinematic release. Again, the plot closely follows the original but was modernized to stay current with the times – now involving things like cyberbullying. For almost a century, The Mummy has delighted audiences on the big screen. Universal Pictures’ The Mummy franchise began with the 1932 movie. In the film, archeologist Sir Joseph Whemple (Arthur Byron) stumbles upon the tomb of an ancient Egyptian priest who was buried alive. He and his crew unwittingly resurrect Imhotep/The Mummy (Boris Karloff), who escapes and disguises himself as an Egyptian professor while searching for his love, Princess Anck-es-en-Amon.

Encouraged by the modest box-office success of The Mummy and the success of other monster movies like Son of Frankenstein, Universal Pictures decided to revive The Mummy in 1940 with The Mummy’s Hand. Aside from its name and use of footage from The Mummy, the film’s story has no connection to the original. Instead, The Mummy’s Hand follows archeologists Steve Banning (Dick Foran) and Babe Jenson (Wallace Ford), who are lured on an expedition to the tomb of an undead mummy, Kharis (Tom Tyler). The campy horror movie received three direct sequels, The Mummy’s Tomb, The Mummy’s Ghost, and The Mummy’s Curse, with Lon Chaney, Jr. taking on the role of Kharis.

The Mummy went on hiatus for several decades before filmmakers decided a modern reimagining was necessary. The result was director Stephen Sommers’ The Mummy (1999), the most popular and recognizable of the Mummy movies. Sommers moved away from the horror premise and turned The Mummy into an action-adventure film, selecting Brendan Fraser to portray Rick O’Connell, an Indiana Jones-esque figure and treasure hunter. In the film, O’Connell and librarian Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) are swept up in an adventure when they accidentally awaken the mummy Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo).

A successful sequel, The Mummy Returns, followed The Mummy. Fraser and Weisz reprised their roles in the sequel, in which O’Connell faces the dual threat of the resurrected Imhotep and another ancient evil, the Scorpion King (Dwayne Johnson). Unfortunately, reception cooled considerably with the third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, leading Universal Pictures to scrap plans for a fourth installment and reboot the franchise instead.

Universal Pictures released The Mummy (2017) with high hopes of rebooting the franchise and kicking off a shared cinematic universe, The Dark Universe, featuring the studio’s most iconic monsters. The film follows U.S. Army Sergeant Nick Morton (Tom Cruise), who unwittingly brings the ancient Princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella) to life. However, critics brutally panned The Mummy for its lack of campy horror or swashbuckling adventure, leading to the cancellation of the shared universe. The Mummy then remained untouched until Cronin announced the 2026 reboot.

The client is the mysterious Count Orlok and he intends to buy property directly across from Hutter’s residence. But as bodies pile up and Hutter experiences strange phenomena, he sets out to prove that the Count is actually a vampire.

The Pacific Rim franchise is set to return with a new prequel series produced by Lionsgate Television and Chronology Entertainment. The film was a box office hit and earned high praise for its stunning visuals and putting an artistic, modern-day spin on the monster film genre. It had the potential to start another Kaiju franchise like Toho’s Godzilla or the Monsterverse. Del Toro was working on a sequel before the first film even premiered. However, the sequel was put on hold due to studio conflicts. Ultimately, the movie was greenlit, but del Toro handed directing over to Steven DeKnight because he could not be in China for the sequel’s filming due to his work on The Shape of Water.

The sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprising, finally premiered in 2018. It follows Pentecost’s son, Jake Pentecost (John Boyega), a former Jaeger pilot who has turned to a life of crime. However, when a new kaiju threat arises, Jake’s adoptive sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), gives him a second chance to prove himself and save humanity. Pacific Rim: Uprising received mixed reviews, with critics praising the performances, visuals, and entertainment value but criticizing the story and lack of originality. Unfortunately, the film was a major box office flop.

Although DeKnight has floated ideas of doing a Pacific Rim and Monsterverse crossover film, there are currently no confirmed plans for Pacific Rim 3. However, the franchise has lived on through the small screen. The TV series Pacific Rim: The Black puts an animated, gritty spin on the franchise, following two siblings on a quest to find their parents after Kaiju attacked Australia. Now, a new prequel series is in development, with Arrival screenwriter Eric Heisserer serving as showrunner.

Aside from the upcoming prequel series, the films and shows so far follow the same chronological and release date order. Pacific Rim takes place in 2025, while Pacific Rim: Uprising takes place in 2035.
