Synopsis
As the Vietnam War comes to its end, a Viet Cong spy is sent to the United States

What is The Sympathizer about?
The Sympathizer Season 1 is the first and only season of the historical spy drama miniseries produced by A24, Rhombus Media, and HBO. The miniseries follows the story of Captain, a North Vietnamese spy during the end of the Vietnam War who finds his allegiances tested when he goes on a mission to the US. Park Chan-wook, who previously directed Oldboy, The Handmaiden, and Decision to Leave creates the adaptation alongside Don McKellar. Chan-wook also directs the first three episodes, with the last four directed by Fernando Meirelles and Marc Munden.
What is The Sympathizer based on?
The Sympathizer is based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s 2015 novel of the same name. The novel won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2016, and received critical praise for its nuanced perspective on the Vietnam War, in addition to its portrayal of the protagonist's struggle with his dual identities.
Who stars in The Sympathizer?
The Sympathizer stars Australian-Vietnamese actor Hoa Xuande Nguyen as the half-French half-Vietnamese spy Captain. Sandra Oh joins him as Ms Sofia Mori, a colleague with whom he has an affair, Toan Le as his compatriot who he also spies on, The General, and Fred Nguyen Khan as his best friend Bon. Robert Downey Jr plays a series of antagonistic American agents throughout the series. Other members of the cast include Vy Le, Alan Trong, Duy Nguyễn, Ky Duyen, Kieu Chinh and more.
