At the end of the Vietnam War, a North Vietnamese spy in South Vietnam finds himself fleeing to the United States. While there, he struggles to come to grips with his true allegiances as he continues to report back to the Viet Cong as he begins a new life in a completely different reality.

The Sympathizer is an historical spy drama miniseries produced by A24 and Rhombus Media for HBO. The series is based on Vietnamese-American author Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name. The Sympathizer is adapted by co-showrunners Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar, with Chan-wook also directing three of the seven episodes. Chan-wook is known for his films Oldboy, The Handmaiden, and Decision to Leave, amongst others. Other directors involved include Marc Munden (3 episodes) and Fernando Meirelles (1 episode).
The Sympathizer stars Australian-Vietnamese actor Hoa Xuande Nguyen as Captain, a Viet Cong spy living in the United States. He is joined by Sandra Oh as Ms Sofia Mori, a colleague with whom Captain has an affair, Toan Le as General, his compatriot, and Fred Nguyen Khan as Bon, his best friend. Robert Downey Jr joins in a series of antagonistic roles throughout the series. Other cast members include Duy Nguyễn, Vy Le, Alan Trong, Ky Duyen, Kieu Chinh and others.
