Following his exploration of India, Michael picks up his Bradshaw's Continental Railway Guide once more to head for the borderlands where Asia meets Europe. He travels 2,000 miles from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea through the peaks of the Caucasus and the grasslands of the Steppe, from sub-tropical shore to a volcanic land of fire. He explores Ukraine, Georgia and Azerbaijan, countries which, at the time of his guide, were ruled by a Tsar but a century ago fell to a revolutionary new empire, the like of which had never been seen before. He discovers Cossacks and Communists, monasteries and mosques, tea and black gold. And as he journeys through these enchanting lands he seeks to understand the tensions and conflicts of today.
