Dead Ringers Season 1 is the first season of the American psychological drama-thriller miniseries produced by Annapurna Television and Morgan Creek Entertainment for Amazon Studios. The series is based on iconic horror director David Cronenberg’s 1988 film of the same title. Cronenberg co-wrote the film with Norman Snider, basing the script on Bari Wood and Jack Geasland’s book Twins. The book itself was loosely based on the true story lives of twin brothers Stewart and Cyril Marcus, who had a gynaecology practice together. The 2023 miniseries is adapted and executive produced by the lead writer of Normal People, Alice Birch, alongside lead actor Rachel Weisz. The story gives a modern take on the tale, swapping the lead twins’ gender to female and focusing on current issues in women’s healthcare.
The 2023 miniseries sees Academy Award-winner Rachel Weisz take on the roles of twins Elliot and Beverly Mantle, who were originally played by Jeremy Irons in Cronenberg’s film. Michael Chernus plays the twins’ colleague and scientist Tom. Poppy Liu plays the twin’s house manager, Greta, and Britne Oldford plays an actor having a breakdown when she meets the twins, Genevieve. Jeremy Shamos plays the fundraiser, Joseph, and Jennifer Ehle and Emily Meade play a wealthy married couple who share the twins’ passion for researching women’s health, Rebecca and Susan.
