Ripley is a psychological-thriller limited series created by Steven Zaillian for Netflix. It serves as an adaptation of the 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley written by Patricia Highsmith. Previous adaptations of the novel include 1960's Purple Noon which starred Alain Delon, Marie Laforêt and Maurice Ronet, and perhaps most notably, 1999's The Talented Mr. Ripley. The latter starred Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law and received five Academy Award nominations including Best Supporting Actor for Law alongside an Adapted Screenplay nom for writer-director Anthony Minghella.
Ripley showrunner Steven Zaillian handled writing and directing duties on the series as well. He is an Oscar-winning screenwriter having won the Best Adapted Screenplay honour in 1993 for Schindler's List. His other prestigious works include Gangs of New York, Moneyball, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Irishman. He also co-created, wrote and directed the HBO miniseries The Night Of which starred John Turturro and Riz Ahmed. Zaillian executive produces the series along with Garrett Basch, Clayton Townsend, Guymon Casady, Ben Forkner, Sharon Levy and Philipp Keel.
Frequent Paul Thomas Anderson collaborator, Robert Elswit, handles cinematography duties on Ripley. He previously won the Oscar for Best Cinematography for 2007's There Will Be Blood. His other noteworthy works include Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Nightcrawler and King Richard.
Ripley is led by Andrew Scott portraying the titular Tom Ripley. Scott is best known for portraying James Moriarty in BBC's Sherlock and as the priest in Fleabag. His other works include Spectre, 1917 and All of Us Strangers. He is joined by Johnny Flynn (Stardust) as Dickie Greenleaf and Dakota Fanning (I Am Sam) as Marge Sherwood. The rest of the cast includes Eliot Sumner, Maurizio Lombardi, Margherita Buy and John Malkovich.
