Synopsis
Things couldn’t look any worse, but these underdogs aren’t willing to quit
After a historic 31-0 loss to Australia, the American Samoa national soccer team became known as one of the worst teams in the world. Soccer coach Thomas Rongen is sent to American Samoa with the mission of turning the team around so that they can qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. It’s an extremely long shot, but there’s always hope.

Michael Fassbender stars in Taika Waititi comedy drama ‘Next Goal Wins’
Next Goal Wins is a sports comedy biopic film that is directed and produced by Taika Waititi. The Kiwi filmmaker is known for films like Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Thor: Love and Thunder and Jojo Rabbit. Waititi co-wrote the screenplay with Iain Morris. Next Goal Wins is based on the true story of the American Samoa national soccer team, as they attempt to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. There is also a 2014 documentary about the soccer team with the same name.
Michael Fassbender leads the ensemble cast of Next Goal Wins as Thomas Rongen, a Dutch American soccer coach who is sent to train the notoriously terrible American Samoa soccer team. Oscar Kightley plays Tavita, with Kaimana as Jaiyah Saelua and David Fane as Ace. Rachel House plays Ruth with Beulah Koale as Daru Taumua, Will Arnett as Alex Magnussen, Elisabeth Moss as Gail and Uli Latukefu as Nicky Salapu. The cast also includes Rhys Darby, Angus Sampson, Luke Hemsworth and Kaitlyn Dever. Waititi also makes a cameo appearance as an American-Samoan priest. Read more about Next Goal Wins here.
