As the golden age of television continues, it’s no surprise that 2023 was yet another year full of top-notch shows across streaming platforms. Over the year, some shows debuted new seasons that elevated them to new heights, while new shows brought fresh energy to our screens. One of the strongest new contenders for best TV show of 2023 was Apple TV+’s surprise dystopian hit Silo, based on Hugh Howey’s book Wool. The story follows engineer-turned-sheriff Juliette Nichols as she works to unravel the secret behind why humanity has been reduced to living in gigantic underground silos. Other top new shows released in 2023 include Shrinking, Jury Duty, and Beef. Shrinking is a comedy-drama starring Jason Segel as a therapist grieving the death of his wife while sharing a practice with his boss (Harrison Ford) and friend-colleague Gaby (Jessica Williams) and trying to raise his teenage daughter (Lukita Maxwell). Meanwhile, Jury Duty is a reality hoax sitcom following one unaware juror as he navigates a trail; little does he know, he’s surrounded by actors — including James Marsden as himself. Finally, Beef tells the story of two exceptionally frustrated individuals (played by Steven Yeun and Ali Wong), who’s conflict escalates beyond all proportion after a road rage incident.
Meanwhile, top shows from years past released new seasons in 2023 that brought them to the top of the list as some of the best of the year. The British crime show Happy Valley premiered its final season, which closed off a spectacular three-season run. Similarly, Succession ended its HBO reign with a triumphant fourth season. The Bear also roared into 2023 with an even stronger second season, and Only Murders in the Building continued to charm viewers with its intergenerational humor and killer cast in its third season.
